Looking good, great start! Can I give a little bit of advice though - try to not overuse the smudge or smear tool. It is tempting to use this to blend colours but it will usually cause a slightly blurry / furry appearance to your paintings. I think the Gimp behaves the same way as Photoshop when it comes to blending. Have a look at this tutorial: link . It might look like a lot of effort but it's a good habit to get into when blending colours and will create better looking results. Also, as with Photoshop, it's a good idea to start early with the habit of using custom brushes when painting, rather than the standard round brushes, as this gives a more painted appearance. Have a search for "gimp brushes" here on DA, there's lots to download and try.

Hope you don't think I was lecturing about the smudge tool. It's just that the best piece of advice I was given when I first started out was to forget the smudge tool exists (fun as it is) and learn to blend. That and to learn how to customise the brushes to suit my painting style. I'm not that familiar with GIMP's brushes, but they seem comparable to Photoshop so you should be able to adjust them to taste and download some custom ones.

Hello,
My name is Autumn. I am a nature photographer and aspiring novelest. Recently, I created a group known as #Forest-Borne , which is designed to promote the beauty of trees, one of the most beautiful and vital creations of our Earth.
After looking at your Gallery, I am convinced that you would make an excellent member of our group. If you have an interest in trees and their mystique, please feel welcome to check out the group. We are growing slowly but surely, and I would love to see you contribute.
Thank you for your time,
Autumn
