Description First of all, happy new year to everyone!!! now that the monkey's off my back, ive come to share some new pics from our trip to the Gold Coast in the last 10 days! The weather was incredibly hot and humid to begin with, but the heat lessened as the week progressed and we even saw some extreme electrical storms (more on that later...)
This pic is a compilation of photos i took from the observation deck on the top of Q1; it's basically the same as the 'deck' atop rialto towers in melbourne, except bigger in all respects!

for those not oh-fe with Q1, it's the Gold Coast's and australia's tallest building, as well as holding the title for the world's tallest residential building. The developer Sunland say that its creation came about at a critical stage in the development of the nation and the coast, but i say, cut the crap; it's all about cashing in on the post-olympics real estate boom!

the spire itself weighs about 80 tonnes, so conidering it's up about 78 stories off the ground and supported by about 4 struts towards the bottom is a fair achievement!
...gotta love architecture....

neat. did you piece that in a photoediting program or did you use image recognition software?

how's your architecture program btw? It certainly looks like you're having fun. ^_^ I'm doing an undergraduate architecture program at the Univerisity of Toronto and it kinda sucks.

hey, coolies! another architecture student! that makes, um, two of us!
yeah, im getting kinda good with splicing images together in photoshop- this one had a huge variety of different brightness and contrast levels, so i decided to leave it as i shot it!
as for the architecture program, it would be interesting to know how heavy the one at Toronto Uni is... so far, ive completed the first degree 'bachelor of Design Studies' (3 years) and im going to start the main architecture degree (2 years) next month! im kinda puzzled as to what to expect, but ive heard that the first degree was a walk in the park compared to what's to come!!

nice signature by the way

at U of T, the undergraduate architecture programs have to be done as part of a four year Honour Bachelor of Arts degree, and from there we apply for a 3.5 year Masters degree. It's really heavy on architectural history and theory, which I wouldn't mind so much if it didn't get so repetitive over the years. We've gone over 20th century architecture in at least 3 of the mandatory courses now. o_0

part of an arts degree?! wierd! so does that mean its' 7 years all up? i could go thru primary and high school again in that time (and probably fail everything!)
we just had two half-semester subjects in the last three years that discussed arch history... being the history nutter i am, i rocked up to all of the lectures- big mistake!

yeah, U of T isn't really a school for applied arts, and more a school of traditional academia. I started here with no idea what I wanted to major in and architecture was sort of an 'on the fly' decision when they made us pick in second year.

way! talk about making a life-changing decision in the blink of an eye! then again, during the last year of our first degree, we were given the chance to do another degree in digital media alongside our current one- some people chose it (and many thought that i would too), but it meant rejecting an architecture major for something far less widespread... its always a tough decision!

yeah... I'm still not sure, really. I'm always jealous of people my age who seem to know what they want to do for life. Kind of daunting, actually.

god, i realise studying architecture, i should be ok about tall buildings, but there's something about being that far off the ground that gives me the absolute willies!

"The developer Sunland say that its creation came about at a critical stage in the development of the nation and the coast, but i say, cut the crap; it's all about cashing in on the post-olympics real estate boom!" - haha, one of my lecturers agrees with you, infact, he's refused to go back to the gold coast since the building booms there first started. He showed a pic of the tower in context during a lecture involving ego and ethics, and he made some rather rude comments about it.... something about it being a somewhat phallic monument of extreme ego by the developers, which attempts no relationship with the original meaning of place etc etc.

lol!! damn straight... if anything, the design was simply a replication of the design for the sydney olympic torch. the thought process wouldve gone something like this...
'geez, we're really stuck creating a new design for a skyscraper.'
'yeah, that's for sure. wanna take a break and read the paper or something?'
'sure... man, they just cant stop talking about the olympics and that new torch design.'
'wait... that's it! we'll just copy that!'

*sigh* oh well, at least they found an easy departure point
btw., if you really want to see a phallic monument, check out this one in Hong Kong... its called 2IFC (2 International Finance Centre) and as far as i know, its 88 stories! -> [link] <-

hmm, if only they knew... then again, beach volleyball can be used to promote a lot of things nowdays, right? i think last week here they were using it to promote an anti-drug campaign...
