Description The 'Turning Torso', Malmö, Sweden
Santiago Calatrava (2001-02, i think!)

During our Architecture Studio trip there were many highlights, and taking the train to Malmö from Copenhagen to see Calatrava's work was definitely right up there!

Contextually, this tower is in the new Malmö waterfront development area- not much else to see yet, though some good residential/landscape stuff is happening close by...

Structurally, the tower is designed from a basic concept of rotated cubes around a cylindrical lift/service core, so although it looks pretty creepy from ground level it's actually quite solid!
Our tutor Tony talked about the interest of abstracted geometry in architecture, something Calatrava does exceptionally well; the premise is simple, but the outcome (a combination of aesthetics and engineering) is quite graceful!

wow man, awesome shot and stitching.
i love his designs. though its rather naive for me to pronounce admiration for him. i havent studied on him, just looked at his designs.
BOy, i fell head over heels in love with his elegant designs, using basic lines and shapes in them. i don't see many architects doing that sort of thing. probably due to his engineering background, that great ass.

hahaha, 'great ass' is definitely the word~ i recently saw a shor film at the film festival here on calatrava & the turning torso called 'the socialist, the architect and the twisted tower' and it really showed just how aloof the man really is; the client (some major swiss building company) wanted him around more so they could discuss changes to the design (such as reducing the no. of windows per floor from 10 to 8 to save costs ) yet during meetings calatrava would be like 'have you ever tried spanish wine...? it's the sweetest there is!'

hahah really? well, he's important enough to pull that off. if someone else did that, god only knows what will happen.

well lets face it, there's no pulling out of a calatrava project once you've pumped millions of euros into it!

MegalithicMason [2006-12-08 01:31:30 +0000 UTC]

Very interesting architecture. Is that spine on the side just some aesthetic feature or does it serve a greater purpose? Just wondering if without that the tower would fall.. +D

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

a1106047 In reply to MegalithicMason [2006-12-08 02:28:51 +0000 UTC]

yea, gd question... since Calatrava is so engineering-conscious i'd have to say it's got a structural purpose of some kind, probably additional vertical reinforcement- it would get pretty windy on such an open site!
Oh, and thankyou for favving this too!
