Description My parents & I (my sis slept in!) journeyed up to the Catalina crash site on Lord Howe Island a few days into our trip at the end of November last year.

Until quite recently, Lord Howe's lack of a runway meant that flying boats (Catalinas) were the only means for transporting people and goods to the island.
On this particular descent into the lagoon in 1948, however, the plane clipped the side of the hill, resulting in the deaths of 7 people. There was also a side story to this, as despite the impending risk of exploding fuel some locals managed to rescue two survivors from the wreckage.

As suspected, the inbreeding makes 'em tough on LHI!

This panorama also shows the main mountains on the island in the distance; Mts. Gower and Litchfield.

Montage + Postprocessing done in Photoshop CS3.
