Description Superstudio is an annual event run in each state by the Student Organised Network for Architecture (SONA).. it's a 48-hour competition with a brief given only at the start of proceedings!

This year OUR entry was one of two chosen to represent SA in the national finals (42 entries)... the other one was done by Holly & Alex from my year too! (good onya girls)

Anyway, this concept proposes a new network to upgrade the existing suburban condition. The premise is that roof spaces are under-utilized, so why not use them for social and active space?!
I highly recommend Superstudio; it's been a total blast and i can't thank enough the two 2nd-years from uniSA for the collaborative effort.

Further info is on the SONA website... [link]

I saw an excerpt from this in a hand out they gave us at this year's superstudio, I'm so glad to find the full details online here. It looks awesome and I think the idea is very strong - it reminds me of the towns in south america where most of the houses share party walls /have flat roofs so the roofs are a public way of getting around and hanging out.
Did you enter this year's competition?

wow, it was in the handout?! that's awesome! Last year was my final year so i'm no longer an arch student eligible to enter, but if I were still in Adelaide I would have volunteered to be one of the supervisors for the event this year... maybe 2010 then! Thanks for your message, it's great to get real feedback on work posted up here! How did your team go on the weekend?

We went well, were were one of the NSW state finalists. Pretty excited, working up our submission for the national comp atm. The brief was mostly good, we were asked to retrofit a former mining town with solar panels in such a way as to address its economic, social and environmental issues. You could work on a highly conceptual level right down to a very practical level, and teams from both ends of the strata have been nominated for the finals, so who knows what they'll be looking for in the judging.

great job! knowing how the comp has been judged in the past, chances are the practical ones will get further... and usually the state where the winner is decided is where the winner came from, funny eh?
Still, it's a great thing to put on your CV, something different and enjoyable!

This makes architecture look like playful fun, especially the sketches which convey a carefree almost childlike view of the concept.

In a way the entire project has a childlike optimism to it. It shows a world in which all neighbors get along and punctured tires, broken garden smurfs and cut-down trees are a thing of the past.

I'd like to think this to be possible, but...

very true, superstudio was quite broad-minded last year and it really was a lot of fun (even though the poster printing cost a bundle!) so i guess the ideas didn't have to be quite as plausible as they were a dramatic rethink on the 'suburban condition'!

glad you liked this one!

aah, nope! never seen it... mustve been thinking about a similar book then... funny how anything by daniel libeskind would fit under the category 'eco' though... his work is far too dense and metaphorical, so much that the physical reality uses way too much material!
still, i'm willing to be surprised...

Very interesting idea...it's indeed a good one, but I'm just not keen on the network idea. I'm not sure if it would be worth the money required to build it, not to mention some houses may not be able to sustain a lot of weight on their roofs.

But I love the idea of optimising the usable space on a property, that is really good especially if the people are able to grow their own food.

Congrats on reaching the national finals, an entry like this definitely deserves it. It is imaginative, creative...and it'd be such a cool thing to happen if the idea was to ever be implemented. Well done.

I think its an amazing idea and board, no competition. I think some of the colours are a bit...vibrant for me, lol, but thats a personal thing. Props to you also relying on hand sketching again, we need more of it.

haha very true, the colours turned out surprisingly bright even when we plotted out the posters! i agree though, it was great being able to use so much hand-sketched content for once, it was a great change and the presentation value of it was definitely worth it!

claro!!

buen trabajoo!
