Description Finally something I like
Experiment with planets in 3dsm.
Decided to give some more detail to the sun.
Probably inspired by *AP123 's A Boy Brushed Red and its mod
Textures used:
I'm sorry Sacha, just had to do some other work.

I think the highlights on the planet make it a bit too glossy... but that sun is just AWESOME

Yeah, I think I gave the planet too much bump.
Thanks

I made a few wallpaper versions. I don't feel like submitting them to dA. How am I gonna get them to you?

I'll see if I still have the psd.
Thanks

This is singularly one of the most thought out and then successfully executed works I have seen.
You should most humbly be proud.
You had a great idea and make it work.
Where can one not be happy with that.
I hope to get there, soon, I am getting a bit tired of average, you know?

You know, the better you get, the higher goals you set, and your perception of what is good art changes. There will always be better artists... I think I will never be satisfied myself.

That MUST be true. I get comments saying nice things, "how did you do that...etc" .
I read them and wounder why they are so amazed.
Now I know. I need to not so bloody tough on myself.
Yet I am not what one would call a great artist, yet.
When I can sell it, I will feel like I have arrived.

this is awesome dude, your planets are getting so realistic looking, i mean they were good befor but now they are real good. the only thing i dunno about is that random tiny lil planet by the bigger one, to me it looks a lil out of place and stuck on. but whatever man this is beautifull

Thank you very much Glad you like the planets, gotta get more used to working with them in 3dsm though, I still need some more practice. The random tiny lil planet, yeah, I guess it is out of place.
Thanks again

I love the bit of solar flare on the sun.

Images of space make me love life all the more. I would say I stand in awe, but how can one really stand before the universe? Only in, I suppose.

i wish you would have cut if off a bit before the bottom of the planet. it just seems that like. its lower quality down below. the depth is awesome. and the sun is graet. i also woulsd like to see a hair bit of stars int here somewhere. nice dude.

Great work!! There should be more works like this made in Studio Max. I don't see enough of that kind around.

really nice work. what most pulled my attention at this deviation was the sun. great details you got there!

the critiques I could give you to help improving this piece would be the same dkf and samodj had already pointed you: the bigger planet surface and the empty background.
you don't have to fill that with noise-filtered-stars and so. maybe just some flares could give a even better space experience

ah, one more thing. making light on the planets more red would give more realism to the lighting and make the piece even more enjoyable

19-10 In reply to xRed-thunderDragoNx [2007-01-09 14:29:54 +0000 UTC]

Thank you very much. I experimented a bit with some little flares, but I thought they distracted to much. Yeah about the planet, what I replied to samodj.
The planets, making them more red, I've played with it, but I thought the piece would become too monotone. Besides, our planet is lit by the sun, and it's blueish.
Thanks for your crits

xRed-thunderDragoNx In reply to 19-10 [2007-01-09 19:33:30 +0000 UTC]

surely our sun isn't that red
and if you get your cam to photograph our planet and the sun in the same pic surely colours wouldn't be the real ones (earth wouldn't be so blue)

19-10 In reply to xRed-thunderDragoNx [2007-01-09 19:51:21 +0000 UTC]

blah, just guessing now. I agree realism would benefit from more red colours, but I chose not to for artistic reasons. Thanks once more

xRed-thunderDragoNx In reply to 19-10 [2007-01-09 21:00:32 +0000 UTC]

the artwork is yours. it's a world created by you, so it's you who decides what should be there or not

yeah, you're right. Often people forget this and approach art too technically, I think. And by that I don't mean your crits weren't right or so, I liked them.

This is very well done. I think stars would have been a nice touch though. Really good piece though. The one piece that puts me off is the moons rings, they are very rigid it looks, you should maybe make them more spaced out and blurry kinda. Hard to explain but hopefully you know what i mean Well done!

SamODJ [2007-01-08 21:07:43 +0000 UTC]

I like the idea behind the planets. The close up one is getting there, think it needs a little bit more attention tho - the bump mapping is really in your face, maybe rev up some lighting on it to dull it down a tad.

Still, i like it. Cool sun and all that jazz

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

19-10 In reply to SamODJ [2007-01-08 21:15:23 +0000 UTC]

Perhaps I should have made the bump mapping a little less. It only looks shit in the shadow part of the planets, imo, so doing a second render with less bump for the shadow might work as well. Just have to keep practicing.
Thank you!

DKF [2007-01-08 21:07:24 +0000 UTC]

that is nice. Only thing that bothers me is that the surfaces look a little blurry. Maybe add some stars as well so the piece gets some more depth. Keep it up

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

19-10 In reply to DKF [2007-01-08 21:11:51 +0000 UTC]

Hmmm thanks You might be right about the stars, but I didn't add any because 1. I was lazy and 2. the light from the sun would 'overrule' the light fromthe stars, I think. But point 1 was the biggest factor in the decision not to add stars

sanosoke [2007-01-08 21:00:49 +0000 UTC]

Looks good, the planets are good for 3dsm, but honestly, yours are better when you just use PS. . .it just looks. . .ummm. . .better.
Sun looks cool, but somehow looks like it's not in space, but in a box, or room or something. . .maybe if there were some stars, or something around other than just black to help balance that out.
Also, it's fine that you also work on something else hehe, of course. but nothing else now! only our project

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

19-10 In reply to sanosoke [2007-01-08 21:05:04 +0000 UTC]

Hahaha. Well I purposely didn't add any stars, cause the light of the sun is way ehh brighter than that of the stars. Thanks
