Description After seeing ~artbytheo 's successful attempt at 3d using stereo images, I had to try for myself to see if it could work in space art. I made this image from scratch just for the 3d image. I used a couple textures by *resurgere . As expected, the results are far from realistic (since no one's eyes would be this far apart), so just think of this piece as a stereo photograph in space or something. This is far from perfect, but I'm happy with the result, and I think I'll experiment more with this. Nebulae could get an insane amount of depth using this technique. It would cost a lot of time, but the results could be mind-blowing.

DIRECTIONS:
Let me try to explain how to see the 3d image. To see the 3d image, look straight at the line between both images, then cross your eyes. What you want is not to see 4 images, but 3. By slowly crossing your eyes, try to form a 3rd image in the center that is comprised of both of the right image (as seen by your left eye) and the left image (as seen by your right). If you have trouble seeing the image sharply, try blinking. That helps for me.

If you found my directions too confusing, here is how mister theo explained the procedure.
Directions: Focus your eyes on the center ( the divider between the two images) and begin to slowly cross your eyes, until you see a 3d image ( as you would sense depth in " real life") There will be three images total at this point. The center one will be completely 3d and crisp. The two ones on the outside should only be 50% there, fluttery and confusing to look at, because only one of your eyes is seeing it.
Take a look at ~artbytheo 's 3d stereo paintings which are totally amazing:

You can reverse one of the images and use a little mirror if you have trouble crossing your eyes.

Its wonerful work like this which give me the urge to travel into space, but I cannot. Brilliant view. Looks more photo like than digitally created.

Man, that is a really good idea. I'll be looking foward to your attempt at it with a nebula, that should be cool. Now I'm in the mood for some SIRDS. *goes and kills his eyes looking at them*

Thanks man. Yeah, I'm gonna try it with a nebbula but it'll be extremely hard. We'll see what happens.

^ nevermind about the eyestrain. Keeping a good distance from the screen actually improves clarity AND ease. Some nice depth in this one, especially with the sun/small moon in the light.

Haha awesome, strains the eyes a little more than theo's but still quite awesome. A nebulae would indeed be nice.

Oh man, I tried it but it didn\'t work at the beginning, then I \"practiced\" with artbytheo\'s pirctures and I got it. Now its working with your image, too. Pretty awesome effect. Try to do this with a nebula next time. I think it would be even better!
Really nice work.

Thanks a lot man. I think this technique holds a lot of potential for space art, but it's tricky to do and unfortunately not everyone can see it. Glad you figured it out though! And yeah, I'm definitely trying this with a neb sometime soon. It'll be hard, but the results should be worthwile. Thanks a lot for your comment, oh and ehmm, I want you to know I'm ejoying the starlit sky project you've got going on. Not often do you see a starfield being the sole feature of a piece. I think it's really interesting, so keep up the good work!

Very Cool reminds me of Tool's (well Alex Grey's) "stereoscopic" album artwork for 10,000 days.
I found it worked well to start crossed eyes very close to the screen on the borderline and move backward without changing focus

19-10 In reply to technia [2008-05-26 16:20:41 +0000 UTC]

I find it really easy to do now. I guess that once you know the trick, it gets a lot easier. Holding your finger at about a forth the distance between your eyes and the screen from your eyes and then removing it also helps.
Glad you like it. THanks

zentju [2008-05-26 11:43:27 +0000 UTC]

sounds easy but it is hard x3 i like it so il keep trying

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

19-10 In reply to zentju [2008-05-26 16:26:56 +0000 UTC]

It gets easier once you've done it once. Try to look at your finger while holding it at about a fourth the distance between your eyes and the screen. Somewhere at that distance you should the images from your left and right eye merge in the center of the picture. Now when you remove your finger, the image is probably unsharp. If you can't get it sharp then try blinking while keeping your eyes in the same, cross-eyed position. If it doesn't work for you then that is too bad I guess. Don't feel obliged to keep trying. I know it can hurt if you keep your eyes like that for too long.

it works. of course at some distance from screen but it works

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

19-10 In reply to dadam [2008-05-26 16:06:41 +0000 UTC]

You can do it up close, you just have to cross your eyes a lot more. But yeah, you're right, it's a lot more comfortable to do it from a distance.

Too bad too bad. You know this could also be really amazing in matte painting, but that doesn't really matter if you can't see it I guess. Thanks for trying though

What a neat idea, It reminds me of this book i got when i was a kid, and it was about coral reefs, to make the learning process more "fun" ( and it worked ) it came with this little viewer thing where you would insert cards that were photo's of sea-life, taken with a special camera with two lenses so each side was just a bit different like in this here, and the viwer had two lenses which were done in such a way that it focused the image for you, without having to kill your eyes and it was really sharp too, and freakishly realistic

Good job on this, I was able to make it work ( lots of practice with those "magic eye" books when I was a kid )

19-10 In reply to Chromattix [2008-05-26 16:02:04 +0000 UTC]

It takes some practice to get it right, but now that I know how to do it I can't understand why other people can't do it Maybe you could try it with your 3d render stuff, too, since all you have to do is shift the camera a little bit and render again, although rendering again may take ages. It would be totally awesome to see your Picnic Park Galaxy in real 3d.
Anyway, thanks a lot for your comment
