Nice work! How do you do the background like that? Blending?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

11-73-3-33 In reply to dum-donutz [2009-05-18 09:10:07 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! And yes. I first use a 2B pencil to create quite a smooth background, and then 4B and occasionally 6B for darker shades. Everything is blended on each step.

Ah, thanks. Did you use blending stumps or your fingers to blend? (sorry for all the questions but I'm doing a picture at the moment and would love to create that effect in the background)

No problem
I use tissues or cotton wool.

Could you please teach me how to do the eyes?

Thank you

Well, I can try to explain the way I work when drawing eyes: First I go over the skin around the eye with a light pencil shade (HB, usually, as for most of the skin areas). Then I draw the eyelids and generally shade the relevant areas, such as under the brow. (I always use references for my portraits, so I just look at how it looks in the photo and shade accordingly.)
I add the pupil and the eyelashes, using a 2B pencils for the pupils (and if the eyelashes are dark, for them also). Don't forget the shading of the eyeball: it makes the eye look round as it should be.

Well, it's hard to explain well how to draw without examples and steps, but I recommend that you search some eye drawing tutorials, some of them are pretty good if you want an overview of the process other than "just draw what you see", which is what I do

Thanks, that really helps, I'll trying to post a picture I drew with realistic stuff in a little while, so maybe you could see it and help me with some things, like what I should change, or what's I shouldn't change?
And thanks for all your help! Again, this picture is so amazing.

The shading in here is really good! I think with your gallery in general, your shading is great. The transitions between shades are smooth, and it doesn't have the excessive blending that annoys me so much

I think you may need to work on facial proportions, though. Everything's placed correctly, it just seems like you're not using the whole face. The features are a bit too compact and small, which kinda takes away from the emotional impact. I think just making the features, especially the eyes, a bit bigger would really add to your work

Sorry if I didn't make any sense

Thank you for your critique and for commenting in general
I think I do understand what you mean, but I think Bella just has small eyes (at least it looks like that in this reference)...
