starter kits available on etsy! [link]

If you buy any of the starter kits and still have questions, please note me and please show me what you do with your doll. I'd like to post links on here ^_^

I didn't cover painting or sculpting. There are plenty of resources out there to find the info you're looking for

forgive any and all typos

*Magweno and my friend *Eviecats have poseable art doll tutorials that you can reference. I recommend reading them both. Use these basic tutorials to get your head start. Whatever is not covered in either tutorial it is up to you to experiment. My advice to you is to pour over every tutorial you can get your hands on. Even if it doesn't seem relevant. There will usually be at least one method or material you discover by looking at seemingly irrelevant sources.

Great tutorial! Thank you so much for posting this. Especially, for the details on making your own eyes! I am going to have to try it...I am sick of searching for the perfect ones.

Nice tutorial! Just one question, why not use a brush on silicone rubber instead of a pour one? It always seems that when people make pour molds there is always so much rubber that is wasted for nothing more than as a space buffer. I prefer using a brush on silicone since the layers don't have to be so thick and I can use plaster(which is much cheaper!) to keep the silicone rigid after the original has been removed. I use Rebound 25 since it has very high tactile strength and is not prone to tearing as the OOMOO line is when brushed.

You make beautiful dolls by the way.

This is for beginners. That's why no brush on molds.

Aha, I see why, I always got the impression brush-on molds were easier, since you have more control over the silicone, but that's just me I guess. It' a great tutorial nonetheless

This is awesome, I have project in my ceramic class that is a mix medium assignment, and I really wanted to an art doll of one my creatures. So you're tutorial was a lifesaver because I've never made an art doll before. Thank you much.

Question though. for the mane, where you used black pieces of fur, did you attach it any where else other than head or did you just leave it as a flap?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ZombieHun In reply to CryingForTheStars [2013-06-27 03:37:41 +0000 UTC]

U can leave it as a flap, every doll has a different treatment for the mane depending upon how dense u want it.

One thing I would like to add is that cutting fur fabric is super easy and not as messy if you use an exacto knife, or razor. When I work with fur for hats and such I simply trace my pattern with sharpie keeping in mind the direction of the fur and cut it out. It makes sure you don't shear the fur or leaves tons of tufts everywhere!

I really just want to say that it is amazing that you made this tutorial!!! Thank you heaps!!!

I've been working on my first art doll for 3 months on and off and this just really... oh boy you make it look so much easier then I'd been thinking it was!!!
particularly the part of adding the sculpted parts to to fabric. I've been struggling with this part really bad lol

Im curious though about how well the hot glue holds it all together???

Killslay-steelclaw [2013-01-15 12:00:11 +0000 UTC]

if you were wondering, the best way to cut fur fabric is by using a craft knife or razor blade the back. make sure it is very sharp and then only cut through the backing. this way you are less likely to cut the pile and less will become loose and get up your nose

just a tip i thought i'd share. this is a great tutorial, i hope many others will find it useful too

My Hat is off to you. Not many Artists have the brass to even sell their patterns let alone give free tutorials.

ZombieHun In reply to Koffinn [2013-01-15 01:23:47 +0000 UTC]

i think they're afraid of how simple-stupid it actually is. And I did state in my intro that half the battle is finding the materials to use them in a unique manner So, the biggest hurdle is actual crafting skill and just staying one step ahead of the competition with using unique methods I think thats their other insecurity (although they blatantly list off all their materials in their doll description and from there its not that hard to do your own research lol)

Koffinn In reply to ZombieHun [2013-01-15 01:30:13 +0000 UTC]

Fair enough and I agree with you, a little imagination can go a long way material wise.

This is cool! Y'know, I don't see why people freak out about others supposedly "stealing" their idea just because it's slightly similar. Even with these great tutorials, it doesn't necessarily mean that someone can even make it right, especially me since I'm crap at crafts v.v I might at least try this though

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ZombieHun In reply to UtauxIkuto [2013-01-22 00:53:55 +0000 UTC]

I dont understand their mentality either. They weren't the first to use certain things or create certain features for their own dolls. Its all been done before or certain motifs have already been expressed in different mediums. Its so hard to be original, but its not hard to be unique
