Well, it is all about nyctophobia... (not a very practical thing to have for a haunted castle expedition ^^)
Haha, well I think Philip is a bit more calm in all situations but this can be easily explain. Daniel KNOWS something supernatural is after him all along +plus he comes from the 1890's were people still more or less had some beliefs supernatural beings existed. This makes him WAY more scared shitless... On the other hand Philip goes on an expedition of a CAVE. He is calm and stuff. Yep he does freak out about all the monsters, but he has a more scientific temperament towards them, like "What are they? What is going on?" PLUS he is soo less confused (you know memories and stuff). But I do love them both xD (Danny a bit more, in a 1st come 1st served basis).

Penumbra is easy because you don't have to worry about yur sanity. In Amnesia, that means you are in big trouble.

A pretty swell mentality to have but you see primitive instincts don't work that way you see:
Unknown= dangerous
Darkness= unknown
Therefore a lot of people are afraid of the dark its also why horror games/movies cannot be scary without darkness. ( I'm pretty sure of that fact anyway :3)
Plus its always never good to actually know something is there in the darkness waiting for you to accidentally bump into you. So while you may be safer because it doesn't see you the fact you cannot see it is the reason why its scary, hope this explains my point of view clearly =3

Haha thanks, When I was young I use to ask my father a lot of questions and I asked him about why darkness was so scary so the insight is his =3
I know this is un-neccasary but I feel like sharing a part of my childhood so here is what he said
"Ok imagine you're in a room with only one exit and a psychopathic murderer, it is also pitch black. Now normally in light he will see you instantly and will kill you without hesitation. But in this instance he cannot see you unless you bump into him. However there is a trade off because you see the human mind works in ways scientists cannot even explain. Even though it is safer in the darkness the human mind is mostly thinking about that 50% chance of him bumping into you. Also aided with the human imagination it doesn't even have to be a psychopathic murderer to put you into anxiety. It could be a harmless rabbit or a gust of wind to set the imagination off, so you see while in the short term hiding in darkness is safe its not a great long term survival. Unless of course you either have a brain made of steel or you want a sure fire way of going insane."
So mostly it isn't darkness itself, it is the things inside darkness which spike the most fear.
I don't know what I would rather personally, I guess I would rather the light option since I rather fight then try to evade.
Its really hard to decide whether something is safer due to the different sizes and mentalities of people because one person might have a better time defending themselves and other's might have a better time evading. Others may perish in either conditions due to weakness in both however in times of great stress the human body can do amazing things so the only real question is what can you deal with?

=3 Well, your father's words are wise indeed.
To be honest, I can't pretend I don't fear the darkness, since my spontaneous reaction for example when I hear a sound in my room, is to turn on the lights. But in a situation like the forementioned (which for me means to know that my opponent's vision isn't better than mine), I would CERTAINLY go for the dark option. Maybe because I trust my evading skills more than my fighting. But, as you said, no one can really know how their reactions will be in a matter of life and death.

Well, amnesia somehow plays with Daniels's (One's) fears as shown when he encounters the kaernk, the loading screen says something about his fear of water which he remembered or something. He probably has a fear of the dark as well.
Or Daniel's just...
This is a funny picture anyway~ xD I like the whole "walking on his face" thing!

Nyctophobia makes sense...also, it's much easier to walk around mystery place when you have all your memories. During game, or at least at begin, Daniel is just like empty paper...can you imagine walking around somewhere knowing NOTHING? :/

True. I wasn't making fun of him, though, or saying that he doesn't have good reason to be afraid. I know how he battled nyctophobia as a child, and how his father trapped him in the basement with a bottle of tint that he broke ont he floor as punishment.
I was just poking fun at the overall situation of in-game reactions to the dark. D: Sorry if I offended.
