Description Albeit that bends the definition of orange quite a bit.

Truth be told, I do not understand why APH!The Netherlands is scary. RL!The Netherlands is one of the nicest, calmest, tradingest countries I know (that story from WWII with Canada?Adorabelest!). RL!France is far, far more scary. RL!Italy about 9000 times more.
Do I have some significant lack of historical knowledge, there?

Another truth be told (or admitted, rather) I want, no, crave that mochi. With irrational passion.

Also, the Netherlands is incredibly fun to draw. And paint.

So, well. This is for #APH-Netherlands 's scar contest. Wish me luck

Corrected the eyecolour a little. Thanks to ~Diadorim for pointing it out. I'll redo the haircolour once I have time (and internet) again.

I'm not sure if you were ever informed of the Dutch history that we've gone to quite some extent to hide...

Like all other nations, the Dutch liked slaves. Specifically, making money from them. The Dutch were brutal. Proportionally, more slaves died on Dutch ships than on any other. They spread rumors about other tribes, calling them lazy, etc so more people would buy theirs (they were in possession of contemporary Ghana at the time).

In the America's, the Dutch were rather fond of supplying natives with guns and getting them to declare war on the tribes that traded with the English and the French. Although not going so far as to commit blatant genocide, the Dutch were willing to do anything to maximize revenue for the West India Company.

In Indonesia, they pitted the population against each other. Only a certain elite was allowed to learn Dutch, and this elite was almost 100% Javanese (from the largest Indonesian island). As the conquered more and more of the archipelago, they thought it necessary to murder each respective island's leaders and replace them with their own. They massacred entire villages and islands over the pettiest things. They mistreated the Indonesians so badly they needed a larger workforce, and thus decided to abduct thousands of Chinese. The cultuurstelsel is perhaps more renowned than all of this. The Dutch forced the Indonesians to focus on cash crops, and triggered mass starvation. Infrastructure and education were never a focus.

Then the European Dutchmen themselves. The Dutch were very renowned bankers, and were said to have financed all of Europe's wars. They were ruthless in ensuring they received their payments, but all of this is rather obscure and can't be explicitly proved.

In more modern times, during WWI the Dutch shipped so many goods to the German Empire that the Germans were able to last much longer. They honestly did not care, as long as they could earn money. This angered the original Allies, but the Netherlands was neutral so nothing could be done. Holland under Nazi occupation saw more willing volunteers for the SS than any other country! The Dutch were cold collaborators who shipped off almost all Dutch Jews. We might seem very nice due to Anne Frank, but that is the exception. Amsterdam used to be FULL of Jews, but something like 95% died. Of 600,000 Dutch Jews living in Holland, only 10,000 returned or something along those lines.

These are only some of the main atrocities, but the Dutch have only recently become open minded because of reasons other than money. Can I also point out Geert Wilders in Holland today? He's banned from entering the UK and the USA (for a momentary period) because he would incite hatred. Also, Srebrenica... The Dutch officers watched as the people they were supposed to protect got massacred. The Holland of today is one that came into existence after World War II with lots of help from Willem Drees.

Also, on another note: I love this. His expression is perfect, and he looks just gruff enough. Absolutely amazing.

It's all true. But you have to say it was about fear too. What do you do, as a husband with a wife and children, when a gun is put against your head? When you are offered to life and to get enough food for your family, instead of die and leaving your family behind? To be precise, let them die too? Every country had their horrible and filthy past. But failure teaches success, right?
A very cool name btw. And I must agree, it's a perfect piece of artwork.

Okay. Just the style and the colors are amazing, but those, the texture and the angle are just killing me!! Fantastic, if I could marry a piece of art, this would be the one I'd like to be hitched to.

Oh my goodness, absolutely phenomenal. Great job, seriously.

I love this! It's the most "wow" drawing I've ever saw of the Netherlands!
I gotta say, the Netherlands could be a bitch in the past, and sometimes even scary! We're very nuchter(a Dutch word, literally means 'sober' ) and open minded people. Well, the most of us.
We tend to use a lot of English and curses in our informal conversations, it's actually very funny to hear some of those half Dutch half English sentences!
We do not care much about people whom we don't know personally know but we, well I, would go through hell for family and close friends!

I think it's more about the inhabitants, then the country itself. If you look at the serious dutchman, they are pretty intimidating. Though most of them are nice anyway, just not much of a talker and more of a starer. People from other countries often see that staring as glaring, I think.

Zieberich In reply to DR-Chain [2011-10-29 13:46:22 +0000 UTC]

Hmm, I've been to the Netherlands a few times and never felt that way? And I can't really think it was just out of luck?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DR-Chain In reply to Zieberich [2011-10-30 09:00:43 +0000 UTC]

Well, if you go to tourist spots it's easy to find a dutchman in a good mood, or a joly dutchman. or just places one can have fun >.>;
actually, to see an intimidating dutchman, pretty much means you gotta go to places tourists won't go, but dutchmen will.
But yeah, when you go to cities and their shopping destricts you don't really get to see the intimidating looking people. Cus they find going out pretty annoying. The intimidating kind mostly just goes out to buy daily stuff.

I think the painting is great! Beautiful brushstrokes! Just lovely! It's the first thing that caught my eye.

Criticism wise, it's your choice, of course, so I would never say it's 'wrong', but the colour scheme doesn't really feel like Netherlands so me, his hair being so light blond instead of ashen brown-blond-ish (it IS a difficult colour to describe though but it's also unique in otherwise super-blonde hetalia land) and his eyes are officially more of a pale green instead of blue. Not criticizing the choice, if you want it to be that way Just makes is, for me, less Netherlands, and more Denmark, which is such a pity since it's a wonderful painting! One of my favourite Ned paintings for sure! (His expression is LOVE however, and very Ned, so it's basically the colour only)

I'm glad you had so much fun with painting him though! I hope fervently you will be painting him again! ^_^
