Description Perhaps the last known perfect specimen known to the modern world.
These unicorns were often considered good luck if you managed to see one, and only appeared to those pure of heart.
Now, with the world revolving around science and logic, their home is no longer on the physical plane of time, but in the imaginations of human minds. And with people's imaginations slowly dwindling, they are critically endangered and risk extinction.

Save The Unicorns!
BELIEVE!!!

Brought to you by the imagination of Zhon.

my main material is a wonderful clay epoxy called Magic Sculpt and is sold by the company Wesco. It imitates bone really well!

One of these days I will make a tutorial for one of my fantasy skulls!

by the way - after i saw some goat skulls in your gallery, i realized a mistake by the horn, this horn and a goat horn look really different

Yeah, this horn is modeled after the fantasy spiraled horn, not the goaty-unicorn version. I plan to do several oddball "Unicorns around the World" series of skulls.

This is skull of a little ruminant (sheep). You should use skull of a horse

I loooooooooove this!! How much would you charge for a sculpted horn like this, but longer and curved?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Zhon In reply to swandog [2008-08-29 17:57:51 +0000 UTC]

The price of the horn itself would range on the size. A 1 foot horn would run about $15. (sculpted out of Magic Sculpt). And I can add a curve in it any way you like.
If you are looking for a more natural (and durable) horn with slight twist and slight curve, I do have a horn from a small female Eland that is about 20-ish inches long. I could send you a picture of it if you'd like. It has some cool definition too! Better than what any human could sculpt.

swandog In reply to Zhon [2008-08-29 20:38:31 +0000 UTC]

Here is the length and curve of horn I'm wanting, and I would like for the spiral of the horn to look as close as possible to a narwal's: [link] ...The horn also needs to be very sturdy, so that if it bumps against a door frame, it won't break.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Zhon In reply to swandog [2008-08-30 02:31:42 +0000 UTC]

hmm.... It is possible to sculpt one!
You have a VERY cool design!
The sturdiest horn you can ever get it a REAL horn (since the animals bash them around so much. They won't really chip or shatter if you drop them).
If you want a sculpted one, my material I use can take quite a beating, but if dropped it will snap. Think of it like Super Sculpey, but harder and slightly more durable.
Bondo horns are also a GREAT way to go. Very sturdy and light. But... I'd need to cast an existing horn. Your horn looks a lot like an african sable horn (just twisted instead of ringed.) If you's like a more sturdy fake horn I'd suggest a cast from a sable. (which I have access to... it's a thicker horn than what you sketched though)

But yeah! I can sculpt one, problem is, it won't be as sturdy.

I can fashion any of the ideas above with a 3/4" rod in the middle for stability and for easy installation.

swandog In reply to Zhon [2008-08-30 09:17:23 +0000 UTC]

Can you possibly work in resin? I've seen resin narwhal tusk replicas, and they look real, and are very sturdy (I will, of course, try my best to be very, very careful with mine, but it might still accidentally bump against something at one time or another)...I would actually use the top third of a narwhal tusk replica for my horn, but I really do want a curved horn, thus my dilemma. If you can possibly sculpt one that looks just like this, but curved (and maybe with a rod inside, as you suggested), that would be perfect: [link]

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Zhon In reply to swandog [2008-09-03 05:22:50 +0000 UTC]

Sure I can indeed!
The rod will go throughout the wholelength of the horn, except for the last inc h or two.
In the case of the curve, I'll be using 1/4"-1/2" allthread rod. I'll also include a couple of washers and nuts for you that fit if needed.
About how long would this horn need to be? and approximately how thick?

Hi again! Was just curious if you were still willing to make me a unicorn horn? My unicorn fursuit is finally going to be made (soon) now, and I'll be needing a horn for it. Here is what her horn looks like: [link]

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Zhon In reply to swandog [2012-01-15 05:16:04 +0000 UTC]

I can indeed still make one for you!
Either a hand spun one like the one on this skull, OR I now have access to a cast narwhal tusk! I can send you a cast, and even have the ability to put the curve into the horn before the plastic sets up!

Let me know which type you would like and what the horn's length is.

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

swandog In reply to Zhon [2012-01-15 13:00:09 +0000 UTC]

P.S. I think just using the top third or so of a narwhal tusk should work fine, depending on how long your tusk is; the one in the pic I linked to is 6 feet long.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Zhon In reply to swandog [2012-01-24 03:36:23 +0000 UTC]

Ok! I just gotta buy some more silicone and i can cast you a curved horn!
The tusk I have is just shy of 5 foot. So i can cast you 2.5 feet if you'd like (half) And either you can cut it to the length you would like, or I can set a bolt at the bottom of the tusk and seal it in with resin.

I plan to do a light resin coat (for the hard shell) and filling it with expandable foam. Willt his work for you or should I do a solid resin horn? or a hollow horn?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

swandog In reply to Zhon [2012-01-24 13:23:45 +0000 UTC]

Well, first, what would this cost? And do you have a photo of the specific tusk you have? All the tusks I've seen online look very different from each other, so I'd like to see what this one looks like before I go with it. Bone Clones (who had the exact tusk I wanted, in the pic I showed you), wrote me back to say that they could bend that one (the top 2.5 feet of it; it's 6 feet total) for me in a special oven they have, but it would cost about $300 for that. They told me it would be very durable, being made of polyurethane resin, but I'm not sure how heavy it would be. How heavy is your tusk replica? I'm just not sure what is best to go with, for use with a fursuit! D:

Zhon In reply to swandog [2012-01-25 01:18:05 +0000 UTC]

The tusk I have is actually a copy of the Bone Clones tusk, but it was a reject. The first like...20" of the tusk is flawless, then from there back it had broken/shattered into maybe 6-7 pieces (so it's imperfect...I would suggest just doing the perfect first 20"...which is shorter than the desired 2.5ft...but would be more wearer friendly. And doors/cielings wont be too much of an issue.)

The whole tusk that I have probably weighs maybe 5 lbs (altogether and in resin. Before moulding the original part was made out of plaster, which is why it broke.) The flawless first 20" would weigh about a pound if I cast it hollow and then fill it with an expandable foam. It'd weigh maybe 2 lbs if I cast it in solid resin. I use a resin similar to what Bone Clones uses (2 part polyurethane) but I can adjust the cure time/hardness by adding more or less of the hardener. So I can pour the cast, and as it is setting off, pull it out of the silicone jacket and hold it at the desired curve until it cools. The resin doesnt get THAT hot...but hot enough for me to wear gloves.

swandog In reply to Zhon [2012-01-25 13:41:18 +0000 UTC]

Well, I would really like to go with 2.5 feet, if possible, so maybe I should pass on this tusk, and go with the one from Bone Clones? So hard to decide! D: And I don't know if it's best to go with solid resin or expandable foam, since resin is more durable, but foam is more lightweight. (I did hear that foam horns are more prone to break; one of the horns on this suit broke during traveling to a con, and that's what I'm hoping to avoid: [link] )

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Zhon In reply to swandog [2012-01-28 04:29:35 +0000 UTC]

If I cast the horn in a fairly thick layer of resin it should be pretty darn sturdy! So with a resin shell about 1/8" thick (the point, maybe the tip 3" would be solid) it should be able to withstand being dropped. Then i can just fill the core with hard expandable foam.

But let me see what I can do to get you a 2.5 foot horn. I gotta get a little more casting silicone, but if all else fails in me putting together all the shards of my plaster cast, i could cast my good upper part of the tusk twice, splice in pieces to follow the curve, and re-cast it for a longer version that wont be missing chunks.

swandog In reply to Zhon [2012-01-28 11:39:57 +0000 UTC]

Well, okay, but please don't go to a lot of trouble, expense or time on my account, since I can just as easily go with the Bone Clones horn. (It's expensive--about $300--but it's exactly the kind of horn I was looking for, and would only take them 3 days to customize for me.) Anyways, I'm hoping Qarrezel can make this suit for me, and you've worked with her before, so you probably know what she needs. Here is a WIP ref sheet of the char I'll be making the suit of, so you can get an idea: [link]

👍: 0 ⏩: 0

swandog In reply to Zhon [2012-01-15 12:56:58 +0000 UTC]

Yes, the narwhal tusk, please! This is the kind of imperfect/random spiral I'm looking for: [link] (preferably) or [link] , but with the horn slightly curved like in the ref pic. I need one at least 2 feet long, but possibly 2.5 feet, and around 2 to 2.5 inches wide at the base. Here's another ref, to give you an idea: [link] (please ignore the colors on that; the scanner ate them totally...use the colors from the other ref instead).

Basically, you know more about realistic fursuit heads than I do, so just compare the horn size and length to heads you've already made, and do whatever looks best and most natural, keeping in mind that Luna is an medieval-style unicorn, whose horns were longer and thicker than the modern "horned horse" type. It also needs to be as lightweight as possible, and very sturdy, in case I accidentally knock it against a door frame (if I forget to duck in time). Nicks and scratches I can paint over, if needed, but I'd prefer it not to snap. The horn can be left unpainted, since *Qarrezel can do that, but if you want to paint and lacquer it, that's fine. The colors have a pearlescent sheen, like this: [link]

Anyway, let me know, and THANKS SO MUCH!! <3<3<3
