Description The skull of the Kaiser Dragon of the Appalachian Mountains.
Once thought to be extinct, a recent find of an unfossilized skull proved the theory wrong.
Not much is known of this rare species of dragon, though native stories tell of the beast being a great tyrant of the land. They believed that ritual offerings would deter the beast's wrath and bring good fortune to their tribes.

So for those of you out East... please keep your cats and dogs indoors.

Naw, no dragon skull is ever bad when you use the help of a real one! I actually like the horse base you used!

Depends on size and how elaborate. But at the moment I dont take commissions (busy moving and with side projects) I should be open late this year.

I wonder why so many people use mammalian bones for dragons which are reptiles... You're not gonna fool me, I'm a nerd when it comes to zoology! xxD
I'm not questioning your skills, this skull is a work of art, but it is not even remotely similar to what I'd consider a dragon skull.

Zhon In reply to PeteriDish [2012-01-02 17:41:32 +0000 UTC]

Lol! But Falcor was mammalian! He had hair and fluffy dog anatomy!

But being that dragons are left up to imagination, surely there would have been some that were mammals, avians, even insects : [link]

Just like how they are saying dinosaurs werent really lizards. Now they have feathers and some had hair.

LOL!
The world may never know....but it is fun to ponder!

So exactly how much do your commissions go for? Because i would absolutely die if I could get something like this

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Zhon In reply to Squidni [2011-12-06 13:31:07 +0000 UTC]

For something of this caliber, maybe $250-275. All the skull and horns/spikes are real bone, and only put together using minimal blending.

For something the size of the African Cragback skull, it'd be about $350 (and I do have another skull base for him and sable horn cores)

Unicorns for $100 (since they are easy and technically anyone could make them!)

im assuming this is an art piece, but ... 70 percent of me wants to ask.. is this thing real??

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Zhon In reply to RoFlo-Felorez [2011-10-12 03:31:26 +0000 UTC]

This is real bone and real bone pieces used to make this. All blending was done with a sculptable epoxy clay.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RoFlo-Felorez In reply to Zhon [2011-10-12 03:50:43 +0000 UTC]

so this is a real skull made of .. real bone??

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Zhon In reply to RoFlo-Felorez [2011-10-12 04:09:18 +0000 UTC]

The base is a real coyote skull, horns are real corsican sheep cores, cheek blade thingies are deer incisivums, chin spikes are chamois horn cores.

So yes! Skull made of real bone!
About 85$ bone, 15% sculptable epoxy clay.
Then painted (rather horribly) to be white. (The next one I will stain to look fossilized)

RoFlo-Felorez In reply to Zhon [2011-10-12 04:28:50 +0000 UTC]

ohhh ok, i was wondering how this skull could have possibly come out so awesome looking, and i think its a rather nice painting of white

wow, this is amazing! it so much looks like the real deal, except for the bright white color
are you thinking of getting it toned in some way? to make it look more like it have been lying in the ground?
again, brilliant work

the details in the nose are too fine, and the frontal jaw area's look too real as well. I want to say you sculpted this on top of an existing skull of sorts?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Zhon In reply to Wakerra [2011-08-16 03:19:33 +0000 UTC]

The base of this was indeed a coyote skull.

mantiswind [2011-08-14 05:13:43 +0000 UTC]

I think its really cool, my only suggestion would be to change the way the large horns come off of the skull to make it look more realistic, that section is too smooth and blended, sort of like a ram skull.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Zhon In reply to mantiswind [2011-08-16 03:20:18 +0000 UTC]

The main horns were supposed to look ram-ish as I did use corsican sheep horn cores. Blending spot there is probably the most fakey.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

mantiswind In reply to Zhon [2011-08-16 05:11:48 +0000 UTC]

the horns themselves look great, its just the little section where they come out of the skull. Keep up the good work!
