we found this merganser duckling completely alone and running around a busy parking lot at my son's school, more than a mile away from the nearest river.i know you're not supposed to pick up baby ducks because the mother is often nearby and has only left the ducklings for a few hours, but i was pretty certain this one would be run over by a car within minutes, so grabbed it. i looked around a nearby field for a long time, even put it down in some bushes, but it ran immediately over to the parking lot again.
anyway, we took home and called a a wild bird rescue to take it in. they only eat fish, otherwise i would have raised it.

I didn't realise they eat fish! I'm shure if given the chance, they'd become vegetarians. I hear Tofu is quite the rage in neaby ponds here.

well... one day, when my then 6 year old son insisted on wearing blue nail polish to school, i asked him after school how the kids had reacted to it. he said, "all the girls said it was really cool." and what did the boys say? i asked. "they didn't say anything," he answered. "they just thought it was cool secretly."
so... i betcha all those people who saw you waddling but didn't tell you how cute you looked are just thinking it SECRETLY

How sweet it is! I'm so glad you didn't just leave it in the parking lot, a lot of people would have. Too bad you can't raise it yourself though that's fun, I raised a little mockingbird once and felt so proud when it finally flew away one day, just like it was my own baby!

I've raised a few crows too and kittens, it is very rewarding when I was working for the vet I'd always be the one to take animals home with me overnight.
