It is literally an occupation.  Rarity's occupation.

The only thing I can find referring to what you're talking about is talking about a gold rush in Seattle in the 1800s, and that's the nastiest Urban Dictionary has to say on the matter, and nasty is basically their entire thing.

But then again, with the sort of things rattling about in your headcanons, I guess I shouldn't be too surprised lol
