Heh, was searching through my files and found this piccie...it's an older one, but I still kinda like it. ^^ I know that there are some severe anatomy issues present, but there you are. ^__^Doesn't Amelia just look too contented? Zel doesn't look too put-out either. *cackle*

Awww isn't it Adorable
Hmm there is something... intriguing about this pose almost as if... I can't shake off the feeling that Zelgadis is a little like a Fortress or Wall, but he is not putting it between himself and Amelia. It's more as if he was taking her closer so he could protect her. He is covering her with his arm and legs, bringing her as close as possible. His face is wonderful there is that... nostalgic look in his eyes, almost as if he was remembering something he knew long ago but had lost it, he is telling about it to Amelia, he is confessing, there is that soft look in his eyes. Maybe he tells her that he had finally found what was lost, and that was Amelia, that was Love. I can almost imagine him saying "I will be always with you. I will always protect you". She can't be happier right know and she tries to return that feeling to Zelgadis. She is relaxed and happy while being with him. For many people he may be cold and emotionless but she knows that he has a warm body and a heart that beats deep under this indestructible shell he was given and she know that this warmth and that heart belongs to her now. That Zelgadis is Her now.
I just love your technique. The way you used colors, they are bright and one can almost feel both warmth and cold. The way you drew Zel's skin is just Formidable, it looks so... cold and when you add those stone thingies it makes him look really tough. But his face is really warm and soft, there are sweet emotions written on his face. When one talk about Zelgadis one can't forget about his hair, and those are FORMIDABLE here. So many different colours, shades and shapes, his hair are... well almost Alive on this picture.
Amelia is also very cute. She looks like a small adorable creature which looks for warmth and safety, and she finds it all in Zel's arms. She looks so content and happy in this picture, she is a warm, sweet and adorable creature.
Last thing. Trust me, you can't even imagine how amazed I was when I saw this one, I mean... the fact that not a single line is visible on this picture, every shape is sculpted by colors. Every curve, muscle, hair, every aspect of clothing. It all creates and astonishing effect.

First of all, please let me apologize for taking so long to answer you; I have no clue how I could have missed such an in-depth and amazing comment! Observations such as these are so very rare, and it's a wonderful treat to be able to see how others see my work, and in such detail!
I agree with you wholeheartedly in your regards to Zel; he seems extremely cold, rough and sometimes frightening in stature, but we have found out that this is not everything he is; far from it. He can call a few people friends, and even fewer people TRUE friends. Lina, Gourry, and Amelia, I believe are his closest companions, and Amelia seems to hold an even more rare space in the chimera's regard. I mean come on, how many people can say that they've put Zel in a figure eight leg-lock and lived to tell about it? XD
I have been a staunch supporter of Zel and Amelia for a long time; and it has given me many opportunities to really study their respective characters. Yes, Amelia is gung-ho and believes very strongly in her ideals, but she is very honest and open-faced about how she views the world. Zel on the other hand, is full of secrets, bottled-up emotions, and sometimes his social-retardation causes him to be misunderstood, much to his companions' amusement and/or chagrin.
When I draw characters, especialy ones like Zel, I really try to bring out as much emotion as I can; as you have very perceptively stated, with his features, he looks exotic and tough, but it is possible to convey the proper emotions through his face. Despite that he has eyes ringed with stones, and it can sometimes distract from his features, he is a very emotional individual, and it is a lot of fun and a good challenge to portray those emotions however I can.
Zel is particularly fun to color; as is evidenced by his skin and especially his hair. I dislike coloring something in only one shade and/or tone; everything is filled with color in real life; it is only right to do the same to my subjects. ^_^ Zel's hair is so full of textures and shades; I can't resist adding layer after layer...just to see how far I can take it.
Heh, Amelia actually came out smaller than I intended, but this is one of my first renditions of her, so I guess I can excuse myself a little. XD I wanted her to look happy and contented, but not so much that she was being hyper about it. Despite what many people think about Amelia, she is not hyper 24/7. *laughs* I think Zel also has a calming effect on her, just as she has a loving, uplifting effect on him. I think that in time, Zel would feel comfortable sharing his thoughts and secrets with her, and Amelia's upbeat nature and encouraging presence would help Zel greatly throughout his life.
I am both amazed and very happy that someone commented on the lack of linework on this pic; this was actually something of an experiment, and you noticed it, thank you!!
Again, thank you SO much for your incredible comment; it was so much more than that: it really made me think about the how's and why's of this picture; something a "hey neat," or "omg i like it lol" just doesn't really encourage. Not that I mind that, but it's so nice to get something that really indicates that someone has really LOOKED at a picture, instead of just seeing what they want to see.

Huh ?? In depth and amazing
Don't forget about Lina using Zel as anchor, when they were hunting for that water dragon. Though I believe that Zelgadis simply don't want to put his life on the line, he is more than perfectly aware of what Lina is capable of. Well Zelgadis had a rather rough life I believe, are there any information on how old is he ?? Anyway, he probably suffered a lot and created a wall behind which he sealed his emotions and feelings. But Amelia and the "rest of the gang" are slowly demolishing that wall.
To be honest when I was watching the series (like AGES ago) those stones on Zel's face looked more like some kind of tattoo, they weren't authentic enough to think of them as stones. In this picture only a blind wouldn't notice that they are real stones. Well I guess you are right, Zel is a pretty interesting fellow, his appearance is much different from other characters. Well, where else can you find a golem/demon/troll mix that guy is probably one of the most unique racial mixes in anime. Hmm layer after layer you say ?? It would mean that when you start drawing Zel there is no telling how long you will take playing with him, huh ??
Well I like how Amelia looks, she looks quite nice and in-size though, now that I look at it, her head seems to be a bit too large for the rest of her body, while the rest of her body looks really nice, petite and sweet ^^ Amelia being hyper 24/7... I don't want to be in the shoes of a person who'd have to sleep in the same bed, or even same room, with her. Mhm to be honest I loved one scene... I'm just not sure whether it was in Next or Try, Zel was on some kind of desert venturing and looking for the way to cure himself, he was drinking water and there was one of Amelia's bracelets around the canteen... to be honest if Zel ever finds a way to change himself back I'm feeling sorry for him, imagine how you would feel having Philionel (did I spelled Amelia's father name correctly ??) for a father-in-law XD

Mhm I can't quite agree with "see what they want to see". You see (too much see T-T) every person see the picture differently, and they interpret it while "using" their own imagination and experiences, there is now way that viewer will understand the picture like it's creator. I'm a tiny, irrelevant author here on Deviantart but even now I can say one thing. I'd trade all favs I ever got (not many :-P) for one good comment, cause comments are worth much more than favs, at least that's what I think.

Your comment was a lot more in-depth than you're giving yourself credit for. The vast majority of the people don't write more than a few words, and they're usually something like "nice," or "cute," or "Great work!" Now this isn't to say that I don't appreciate the people taking the time to comment; quite to the contrary. However, I will always take special note of the people who take time to really comment on what they see, and actually write down their thoughts.
Heheheh, "NEXT" was my favorite season, hands down. Zel makes a great anchor, but if he didn't really want to do it, you know he would have escaped somehow. It was hilarious when he tried to appeal to Amelia to help him, and she totally threw his stony butt to the wolves. Bwahahahah. XD
As for how old Zel is, I believe he is 2-3 years older than Lina, with Amelia being one year younger than she is, and Gourry being the oldest human of the group. So that would make Gourry at the beginning of the entire series, around 22, Zel at about 18, Lina at 15, and Amelia at 14. Each season supposedly equals a year, as well, so you do the math as to how old they are by the end of TRY.
A tattoo, huh? I wasn't sure what they were at all; first time I saw Zel was in a magazine dated around 1996, and I could see that they stuck out, unlike tattoos; but I had no flipping clue what they were. XD Once I realized that he was cursed with a third Rock Golem, my little brain went "AH-HAH!" XD He is actually one third Rock Golem, one third Brau Demon, and one third Human. He sadly doesn't have the regenerative powers like Dilgear, the wolf/troll hybrid.
Heh, you're right about the layers; I have a general idea how long Zel will take me, but sometimes my brain wants to try different things, and add a few more colors to the mix. ^_^
Heh, I tend to draw my anime characters with slightly enlarged heads; and it becomes even more apparent when you use the Slayers; their hair on the whole is quite large and spikey, so it makes their heads look that much bigger. XD
Luckily for us, Amelia isn't hyper all the time; only when she's really determined about something, and she grows up a LOT during the series. Everyone sees this, especially Zel. He never seems to really mind being paired with her, have you noticed? Heh, Prince Phil is made of awesome; I love that guy, he's hilarious. Gung ho and hyper he may be, but you can't deny that Saillune is a very successful city in the series; he's a good ruler, and I know his daughter will be just as good. ^_^
The bracelet-on-the-canteen scene was at the ending credits of TRY; I squealed when I saw that the first time. XD
Heh, you're welcome to disagree with me, but that's really what viewing a picture is all about; that's why people see different things; in their mind, that's what it wishes to see, whether or not it's a conscious thing or not. Now this is not to say that it's not open for growth of perspective; goodness knows I did that a lot in art class; you can train yourself to see deeper into a piece; but it is rare indeed that anyone looking at my work will go in-depth like that. In pieces like fanart, it is admittedly harder to do; the work is very subjective, and based on an existing world, so you kinda go into it perhaps expecting certain things. *shrug*
I agree with you; comments are worth more than favorites; thought-out comments, that is.
BWAHAHAHAHAH!!! Sesshoumaru? There's a question for the ages....XD Actually, Sesshoumaru is a male. It's more apparent in the anime than it is in the manga; he looks more feminine in the manga, to be sure, but there are plenty of places where it's very apparent that he's male. ^^
It's been years since I have read or seen InuYasha; I lost interest in it when it started dragging and rehashing the story over and over. *sigh* But I still like characters like Sessh; especially since he's fun to draw.

Mhm to be honest one of the most Kick-ass ideas in Slayers was the one with cross-dressing. Jeez I was laughing just SO hard when Lina and Amelia dressed Gourry like a girl and that big warrior that fell for him HILARIOUS, while Zelgadis looked really... nice as a woman, while Lina was taken for man in disguise XD Not to mention that Zel-plushie in Gourry's bra is sweet XD

Isn't it amusing ?? That the stupidest guy is the eldest and most "adult" though I have to admit that Gourry isn't that stupid. He don't get majority of the "long stories" fed to him by Lina but he got a lot of common sense and tactical knowledge and experience

I'm not going in-deep I'm merely looking at the picture, thinking for a sec and stating what I think about it, the problem is, the more I write the more I think about the picture, that's way more and more things come to my mind.
Well Once I saw a pic in which he was woman and Happosai was peeping on "her" while on other Kagome(or whatever that girl's name was) was talking to him about condom and Sess was about to rape her... that's why I'm kinda confused as far as his gender is concerned.
Inuyasha is somewhere on my list to-watch/read but now I have to deal with finishing Ranma 1/2 and Mahoromatic, and after that I'll probably re-watch Sailor Moon, out of nostalgia

Happosai...? You must have been reading a doujinshi or something; I don't think that's something that actually happened in the series. XD There's a part fairly close to the beginning of the series, where you get to see Sess with his kimono top down, and you can see his manly chest. XD

One of the best scenes ever, when Gourry finally broke out of his imprisonement. I loved scenes on the ship when he was sitting with the Volum guy while Lina and Amelia were threatening to blow him up if he tried anything funny. Remind me cause I don't really remember. In that episode where whole male part of party (Slayers Next) disguised into woman. In the end it turned out that the whole/majority of the girls in that girls-only kingdom were men in disguise, right ?? Including the girl saved by Zelgadis ??

Naaah It was my mistake. I recently watched Slayers and Try again and there was no such scene. Only poor Amelia crushed with paperwork, I bet my shoes that Philionel ran away to save some poor people or convert some monsters. It killed me when (in one of the episodes in the first series) he tried to explain The True Meaning of Life to the bunch of ghosts. That guy is SO made of awesome.

Even if there are some slight proprotion issues, the proportions are still better than I could draw. I think it looks really nice, especially the wrinkles, hair, shadows, etc. Overall, a VERY nice job!!!!

I still lack skills in caracter interaction so be happy your ahead of me there lol and yes looking back at old drawings useually shows you how much you have improved over time I was doing that the other day eh not much improvement though lol
