History:
Argonaut class is combination of light cruiser/carrier developed as more combat oriented version of Intrepid class. Comparing to Intrepid, Argonaut is a little bit slower but have better equipped and larger science labs, better armaments and defenses. While Intrepid class was advanced, it was less oriented for combat and was more mid range exploration ship in peace times and high speed scout and courier in war times. At the beginning of Dominion war, Intrepid class was still been built in small numbers, they were prized for their sensors and were considered valuable to be risked on front lines, thus Starfleet needed ship more capable and more resilient then Intrepid but having advanced technologies of current generation. Argonaut class was born, however with Starfleet prioritizing highly into larger combat ships, Argonaut class which was still early in design, continue slowly but it won't be till 2381 when first ships is actually launched.
--Exploration and diplomacy--
While more combat oriented it is more suited for long range exploration and survey then its older sister. It has slightly larger and better equipped science labs, one of best sensors in the fleet and larger hangar bay which can hold far more shuttles and runabouts then Intrepid, as well ground vehicles. Argonaut is also suited for first contacts. It is well armed and protected thus it can protect itself if needed. Ship is also equipped with several conference lounges and few well equipped VIP quarters.
-- Tactical capabilities--
Argonaut is more heavily armed then most ships of her size, which help defend herself if needed better then older class. It carries thirteen Type XII phaser arrays, two Type X Pulse phasers, one rapid fire Quantum torpedo launcher and four Photon torpedo launchers. With this arsenal and her sub speed she is capable of high manuvers, and her powerful and durable shielding allows her survive longer then Intrepid class would. Argonaut do not have Ablative armor, but rather standard High Density armor.
While Argonaut's warp core is not fastest one, its still fast for modern standards, her sublight engines were another story. Comparing to the Intrepid class, Argonaut's impulse engines were enlarged variant of the Valiant class, allowing her for fast manuvers and sublight speeds. Unlike Intrepid, Argonaut class is not capable of landing on planet surface but it is capable entering atmosphere.
Argonaut's have larger shuttle bay thus were capable of carrying more auxiliary crafts then Intrepid, at least four Type 9 shuttles and two Type 11 shuttles makes for shuttle complement while it also carry three runabouts, two Danube and one Delta Flyer. With this Ship have extra defenses in form of those three runabouts if needed.
Argonaut's were more capable then Intrepid's, having better exploration capabilites as well tactical ones. They are highly balanced ships capable of multiple of different tasks. Thanks to their design, with low front profile they were also quite hard to hit in combat. With production of Intrepid class stopped at 120 ships, Argonauts were to be its successors, however with Starfleet started production of Inquiry class ships, Argonaut production stopped with total of 70 ships built, however possiblity of another batch of 20 ships to be built from 2397 to 2405 is highly possible, as replacements for some older ships been retired from service.
While not the strongest and most resilient class, Argonaut is nevertheless effective, fast and well looking ship, class which will remain in service well into 25th century. Argonaut's while present in over sixty members were uncommon sight. They were mostly either on patrol's, on 2-3 years exploration duties and only time when one or few can actually be seen is during upgrades in shipyards.
