Description A mecha that's in for repairs. Took about 8.5 hours in Lascaux Sketch. My favorite part of it is probably how you can make out a few details of the cockpit behind the glass.

I'm planning to make a 3D model of this guy over the next week or so. Stay tuned!

You know, you should submit this to some of the Steampunk groups on DevART. They'd love it.

Now THIS is an interesting piece. I hate it when people make these Gundam-ish robots and call them Steampunk. Also, since it's clear you like the Steampunk genre, I'd like to recommend a book called Leviathan. It takes place in a slightly different WW1 era where steam-tech became more advanced and Charles Darwin did more then theorize on evolution by discovering DNA. I believe you would enjoy the series. Book 1 is out now and book 2 will be out next year. Great job!

I like the combination of curves and hard edges. I've been kicking around a similar design for a sculpture.

Funny, I came from your account on 2draw.net, where I could see the various steps of the WiP. Great idea, BTW. Very interesting.

I love the inspiration and the amount of details you have put there.

ZackF In reply to philho [2008-02-13 18:54:12 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! I have an on-off thing going with 2draw over the years where I'll pop in and draw a lot of stuff for a bit and then disappear again. I dunno why, it just grips me sometimes. It's easier to feel detached about my work there, I think, whereas stuff for DA and the like I tend to overwork.

It looks a little like the Dreadnaughts from warhammer 40k.

I wasn't very familiar with them before your comment, but now that I've looked them up I have to agree. Seems to be about the same scale, too, rather than the lumbering giants found in Battletech and the like. Thanks for the heads-up, maybe I should do some 40k fanart sometime!

ok, so i like it in color as well, the setting looks interesting too. i like how the mech seems multi-purpose(able?), like you can use it for a few different jobs

ZackF In reply to toadking07 [2008-01-08 05:16:08 +0000 UTC]

Glad you like it. Yeah, it does kind of look general-use. In retrospect, it actually reminds me a little bit of the Big Daddy divers from Bioshock.

Oh, wait, never mind. If this is how that 3d model is going to turn out.

Anyway, it's awesome- but like I said, the design itself doesn't really look "steampunkish".

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ZackF In reply to Csp499 [2008-01-08 05:14:15 +0000 UTC]

Thanks. I can see how it might not quite seem to fit under steampunk yet, since the machine is currently deactivated (hence no billowing steam) and dimly lit, but I think the design warrants the label.

Thanks, Syfyri! I think I'm finally getting better at not ironing out all the nice sketchiness from my pictures.

ZackF In reply to Callypso [2008-01-07 16:16:46 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! Yeah, I love steampunk stuff too. Bioshock sorta revitalized my adoration of it. Seems like I have a strange mix of neoclassical, 19th century European, and art deco aesthetics, hehe.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Callypso In reply to ZackF [2008-01-09 00:26:30 +0000 UTC]

Hey, that's definitely a good mix in my opinion. Keep going with it and you'll always have a fan here. And I didn't realize that Bioshock had was along the neo-Victorian vein, I wasn't too interested in it before, but I think I'll have to check it out now....

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ZackF In reply to Callypso [2008-01-09 00:37:53 +0000 UTC]

I think it goes by a mix of American and European art deco stylings from around the 30s and 40's. You should definitely check it out for the environments alone if you don't mind the violence and creepiness because the levels are really just beautiful.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Callypso In reply to ZackF [2008-01-09 00:50:39 +0000 UTC]

How creepy is creepy? Because a certain amount of creepiness makes a game memorable and the story stick with you, while an overload of creepiness makes you feel disturbed and want to sleep with the lights on.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ZackF In reply to Callypso [2008-01-10 18:48:08 +0000 UTC]

Haha! Depends, I guess. It's probably not the scariest game I've played, but it has its moments. It has tons of crazy people with masks who are all trying to kill you, and if they don't know you're nearby you can hear them talking to themselves. That can be a bit freaky. Definitely give it at least a rental, though.
