Description The 8th Chadwick is the 8th aircraft to carry the Chadwick name. The Chadwick tradition dates back to WWII and the 13th Attack Squadron, The Devil's Own Grim Reapers. Chadwick was the call sign for the 13th and the CO's aircraft was named the Chadwick. The tradition was carried on during the Korean War, where 13th Bomb Squadron B-26 Invaders with the name Chadwick also carried the the "Winged Wheel" insignia to designate that this was the CO's aircraft. The tradition was neglected during the Vietnam War, but revived by Lt Col Buck Shawhan when he took command of the 13th Bomb Squadron at Dyess AFB, Texas. The 13th Bomb Squadron was deactivated at Dyess AFB in June 2005.

In this photo we see Capt Brain"G Spot/Dot" Farmer and Col Robert McCormick, Vice Commander, 7th Bomb Wing, Dyess Air Force Base, Texas standing in front of the B-1B Lancer "The 8th Chadwick" at the reactivation ceremonies for the 13th Bomb Squadron at Whiteman AFB in September 2005. Col McCormick was the first CO of the 13th when it was reactivated as a B-1B outfit back in 2000 at Dyess AFB. The 8th Chadwick was still sporting 13th Bomb Squadron colors and insignias when she was flown up from Texas to Whiteman AFB to hand over the 13th Bomb Squadron colors to the new 13th Bomb Squadron under the command of Lt Col Thomas Bussiere. So far no B-2 Spirits have been named the 9th Chadwick, but the Spirit of Missouri would be a likely candidate to carry this honor.

It's still a mystery how the Chadwick call signal came about.

I wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of anthing the Reapers can bring to the table. America's enemies should definitely fear the Reapers.

Yup, though I didn't see much of the USAF...

...I worked with the Army the whole time I was in the USAF. Got my first control out at Smokey Hill Range in Kansas with a BONE. That was in Jun/Jul of 2001, and it wasn't considered CAS yet, so it wasn't graded or recorded because some Chief at the Pentagon thought bombers were never going to be CAS platforms... Funny, 6 months later all the guys in Afghanistan had controlled BONEs, B-2's, and B-52s doing CAS for the ODA teams...

Ahh yes, fond memories of the BONEs out of McConnell AFB in Kansas. It was a sad day when they deactivated that unit and sent the BONEs to Texas (I can't spell the name of the AFB there...). I've got to find and scan some of my sketches of the BONE and others I did years ago.

It was great to serve, both the best and worst times in my life all rolled into one! I believe Dyess was the base. The Kansas Air National Guard stood down the Bomber squadron and sent the BONEs to Dyess about the early 2002 time frame.

hehe just bumped into picture through the military section. I know for a fact that on the flightline (which is where they are) it should be a FOD Hazard zone, meaning that the Colonel (whom should know better) should remove his cover as it is a emminent FOD hazard. Strange. My father was Active Duty AF for 23 years... and I'm Navy. But I really like the picture...

Thanks for the comment! The aircraft were only on static display outside a hangar that was being used for the reactivation ceremony for the 13th Bomb Squadron. Col McCormick had just turned over the squadron We were well off the flightline. Actually the 8th Chadwick was the farthest from the flightline of all the aircraft on display for this event. We did see some B-2 Spirits taking off, but they were too far away to get a good shot. Thank you to you and your father for your service to our country!

oh well now I feel just silly. Yeah B-2s are so wonderful. I'm a big fan of A-10s but since the Navy inventory doesnt include those, I guess my principal would have to be the 35s. Hopefully those will be in when I finish college and flight school.

yankeedog In reply to Zero-Monolith [2006-08-29 20:02:40 +0000 UTC]

Don't worry about it, there's plenty of silly to go around! Yeah, the B-2's are cool! A-10's are amazing machines too, I'm surprised the Marines don't have them, it would seem a perfect match. There's a Missouri ANG A-10 Fighter Wing at Whiteman AFB, but I didn't see any while we were there. Good luck with your college and flight school!

Such a beautiful plane.

I had the chance to tour one of these when I was probably 16 or 17. Not too sure what unit it belonged to, just know it along with probably another five or six were on Warner Robins AFB, Georgia.

With that said, quite a nice shot, if I may say.

B-1B's are cool aircraft! The 8th Chadwick is based at Dyess Texas. I just checked the web site at Robins AFB, but couldn't find out what Bomb Squadron that might have been that you saw. Wow, they really have a great aviation museum there!

Yes i understand that in a real world every nation must have some weapons to prevent attack, but we must never forget that their real purpose is death...
But i must recognize that this has created the most butifull planes of the world.

yankeedog In reply to Urus-28 [2006-04-19 20:31:49 +0000 UTC]

Our enemies must must never forget that fact either. I've met some of the men and women who fly these machines and believe me they do not take this awesome responsibility lightly. I agree, the design of the B1B Lancer is very elegant and beautiful despite it's lethal threat. I find it so amazing that in 1917, America didn't even have a state of the art aircraft. American airmen flew French SPADs and Nieports, but today American airmen fly the most advanced fighter and bomber aircraft in the world.

I never think that aircraft pilots are inconscient of their responsabilities, in fact if we are living in democraties it's also because they perfectly do their job

yeah last one i saw fly was at an airshow, it was really damp, so by the time the B-1B had got to crowd center it was really moving, wings back, there was that vapor buffet off the wings, and their was a collective "ahhhh" from everyone there! Just awesome.
