Mm, I'm not quite sure of the meaning behind this but...
I feel that Kabuto, in many ways, has always been in control of his own (personal) destiny. He was lost, his situation shaped him, and he was always searching for himself. If he is a puppet, he is a puppet of fate and happenstance. If he had not been given that void within himself, that lack of identity, he wouldn't have searched for it so desperately. In truth I believe that Orochimaru did little more than give him a path to follow. And the vulnerable Kabuto with pieces missing took to that path with a fierce dedication. Now it could be said, as it seems to be hinted, that Orochimaru set some of the previous events into motion. It's just that when they talked I really got the feeling that Orochimaru really did see something of himself in Kabuto, and this is just me, but the fact that Kabuto never seemed to experiment on himself before Orochimaru's death(?) tells me either 1) he wasn't allowed to or 2) he was waiting to see how far Orochimaru could get as well as his work on the other test subjects of the Oto. Maybe even both!
Mm, sorry for the headcanon drabble, these new chapters have really made me analyze every bit of canon between them that I always loved so much.

I actually have a lot of theories about what orochimaru did, but none of them are canon, yet. i do think it was a bit too much of a coincidence that orochimaru was the one who found kabuto, then threatened the orphananage, and then just happened to be the one they sent after him.i think he had plenty of room to pull strings to get what he wanted.
but thats just me.
and i think what orochimaru saw in kabuto was a bit of himself, yes, but also the vulnerability and need for approval that would let him be manipulated into the most keen-edged of tools.

I do agree that Orochimaru pulled a lot of strings, from what was shown! Oro seems to have always had a talent for choosing the wounded ones, shaping them for his designs, and then releasing them into the world and watching the chaos. I've related his relation to Kabuto and the others as being as different as a ninja and a samurai. Orochimaru is a true ninja in that he used everyone as disposable weapons, where as with Kabuto, like a sword he valued him enough to assure he stayed around. Naturally his intentions weren't exactly selfless as he needed Kabuto's healing skill greatly. What I can't get over is the trust they did seem to have with each other. Even if it was just mutual need, I believe their bond was at least master and apprentice. Gaaah it's hard for me to explain. But I'll never forget how pleased I was when everyone I had argued against seemed to be proven wrong, as when Orochimaru died I was assured that Kabuto had been loyal.
And yes haha I remember having many conversations about headcanon and canon way back when! You're honestly one of the most dedicated fans I've ever seen and I've never failed to be moved each time I see your art for him. It made me feel connected long after I stopped writing about him.

Awsome! It shows the tragedy of Kabuto, his goals are those of Orochimaru, his deamanor is even a variation of that of the snake sannin. He practicaly made himself into a clone of Orochimaru in body. The new chapter even shows that his false demanor is a variation his adopted mothers/the kind nuns character. He thoughts that ceased to be a pupet, but is now one maybe even more than before. This truly makes his life a tragedy.
