When I completed my 2015 I alway knew I was going to have to remake it, not because I was disappointed with the results (it wasn’t), it was because there were a few restrictions that prevented me from making the piece I wanted to.

The first problem was the lack of Wasp, Captain Marvel and Giant-Man. Ant-Man and Wasp were my favourite characters from ‘Avenger:EMH’ and I wanted to represent them both in my work. When I drew my 2015 piece the most recent MCU movie was ‘Age of Ultron’, the next movie to come out would have been ‘Ant-Man’ and I wasn’t too sure if he would go large in the movie so I was hesitant to include him because Giant-Man is used in the final shot of the EMH intro. Wasp’s costume was not revealed at the time so I replaced Wasp with Scarlet Witch. Captain Marvel at the time was also announced but her costume was not revealed. ‘Civil War; was also announced with the reveal of Black Panther’s costume hence why he was included.

The second issue was the software I used. At the time, I didn’t have access to good drawing software so I used MS Paint instead. I didn’t realise the resolution, pixelation and the use of a lot of straight line would be a problem, so I knew I wanted to use vectors to improve the quality of future pieces. Hence, I used OpenToonz for my 2018 piece.

The third issue was the costumes used in the MCU, most were just shades of grey, black. The dark colours made it hard to see details on some characters like Thor and Black Panther. And some characters had boring costumes (Black Widow, Hawkeye, Scarlet Witch) because of the realistic nature of the MCU at the time.

When making the 2018, I decided to give myself strict guidelines. The first rule was to make the piece much more colourful, as opposed to the blacks and greys from the last piece. I decided to not use greys, and in parts which were black I gave it a dark blue shine to it. I also chose costumes which I found would be fun to draw (like the ‘Ragnarok’ costumes) and if the costume was mostly black, I would make the other colours more vibrant (like Wasp and Black Panther).

The second rule was to simplify and streamline some of the costume designs so I would best fit the style of the EMH show. I used a lot of lines and unnecessary detail in my 2015 work, so I tried reducing in my newer piece (have a look at both versions of Vision, Iron Man and Ant-Man). I also decided to make sure the colours were all consistent and use the same colour palette for most of the characters.

My third and final (and most important) rule was not to draw the MCU heroes in the style of EMH, but to draw the EMH characters with their MCU costumes. And not to hesitate when I wanted to exaggerate or minimize certain details in their costumes.
