Description CRAPPY CRAPPY DOODLE of Silas based on the excerpt from "M is for Magic" D:
_ _ _

45 minutes
Mech. pencil, fingers, + eraser

>.<; No critique please...
it was a quick sketch and I know that perspective *coughnonexistentbackgroundcough* and anatomy are off. ^^, Aside from that, the disproportion and lack of physique are purposeful for the way I envision the character.

Daawwww Silas! I don't think there's a single reader that doesn't count him among their favorite Graveyard Book characters. For he is awesome.

I like the dashing outfit you gave him.

:] Thank you.
Though I admit the representation is inaccurate as I drew him before the book was released, so this is based solely off of the excerpt "The Witch's Headstone" from M is for Magic...

Simply beautiful I love the shading, it makes him look ethereal and blends into the background (which is also lovely!)

I just finished reading The Graveyard Book and immediately fell for Silas xD

My favorite scene was at the end of "The Hounds of God" when Silas, Bod, and Miss Lupescu were sitting on top of the hill. ;o; When there's a scene that beautiful, you just Know they'll never get to be so happy again!

I loved Silas, too. He was so wonderfully gallant and kind and humorous in his own way. It broke my heart that Bod never got to hug him. *sniffles*

I'm glad you liked this, and I really appreciate the +fav!

I love the misty graveyard behind him. He totally looks like he's up to something. XD

While I was reading the book it was hard for me to pin-point what Silas looked like. He kept changing for me and I don't really know why. I like your version though, it's a design that I never even thought about.

Nice work!

I'm really glad you like it. :] Silas was by far and away my favorite character. He was so easy to love, yet Gaiman made it so hard to love him...if you see what I mean. I wished so much that Bod could just give Silas a hug.

But I imagine Silas is supposed to be your "generic" vampire, so that gave me room to play around with his appearance while keeping him vague, like Gaiman probably intended.

I really appreciate the +fav!

Rachel1987 In reply to XueLian [2008-10-20 01:34:41 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I know what you mean. XD I wanted to see them hug as well but it just never happened.

And I guess that I wasn't alone in thinking that he was a vampire. I don't remember him saying whether he was or not in the book, but I Just figured... Anyway, I'm glad that someone else thought the same that I did.

I drew this before I read the rest of the book, when Silas was this TOTALLY huggable character in my head.

But then I read the book, and Silas is UNhuggable. He also broke my heart many times. ;n;

But he's still lovable, you see, because

a) He has this flipping sweet handbag
b) He can FLY : D
c) He is so homigoshbestillmyheart GALLANT

Gaiman's on tour right now--here's the link to the videos of him reading each chapter (by the end of the tour, all 9 will be up). [link]

Believe me when I say, NEIL GAIMAN READING OUT LOUD > WORDS ON A PAGE.

Especially the scene with Silas and the banana. You will know what I mean at the end of chapter one...but PROMISE ME you'll watch the video before you read the book. It's that much more epic. |'D

*jumping in out of nowhere*

That is so true! Him reading the book out loud is a fantastic idea. I couldn't wait and read it all before October 2nd rolled around, but after listening to the readings I've developed a better understanding of the voice of the narrative. He's such a good storyteller.

I know~~~
I'm getting the book this Sunday, so I can finally read it for myself. But when I'm done w/ college apps and have the time, I'm still definitely gonna listen to Neil read each chapter out loud.

omg~ NEIL GAIMAN READING OUT LOUD > WORDS ON A PAGE!

Fell completely in love with Silas by the end of the first chapter, he's so funny but oddly smooth at the same time. It broke my heart when it was revealed that he's never eaten a banana in his life. :'D

I haven't seen that yet! I've been neglecting the blog- shame on me!
XD Awesomesauce! I so plan on getting the audio book, because Neil reads his own work brilliantly and with a kind of courage I can only hope I'll develop by the time I have something TO read aloud.

Bagheera was my favorite in the Jungle too. *sigh* Miss Lupescu is a close second only because she gets less page time. Actually- I'm hard pressed to think of a character I -didn't- like, which I think is a very good thing. *laugh*

Sort of an indirect fan...

I have never actually read any of his work...(have looked at the sandman comics...*they are Beautiful* but I didn't have time to read them at the time...;_;...) My friend loves the books and told me about them. They sound fascinating... I know I would like them if I did read them...

ooh! He wrote for the movie "The Mirrormask" didn't he..? I love that movie! XD Yay! I'm slightly less indirect than I thought I was...

and You're welcome

XueLian In reply to E1L0n3wy [2008-10-03 10:21:47 +0000 UTC]

Neil's such a pervasive figure in the fantasy industry, it's hard not to have come by him. ^_^ Like many others, I was also introduced to his work thru the Sandman comics (my first read was The Dream Hunters, [link] a collaboration with the legendary Final Fantasy artist, Yoshitaka Amano), but it was eventually his writing I fell in love with.

I would wholeheartedly recommend reading the novel "Stardust" (and then see the movie, too!), and also--promise me that no matter WHAT you will find time in your life to read Gaiman's collaboration with Terry Pratchett: Good Omens.

Yes, Gaiman wrote the screenplay Mirrormask; he also wrote the English adaptation for Miyazaki's Princess Mononoke.

^^ I love Amano's work too

My friend did recommend Good Omens as well XD hahah Especially because one of the landmarks in it is one near my home

I definitely will read it someday

oh! cool I loved Princess Mononoke!! (that's so neat! the dialogue in that movie in particular really stands out...(I guess that his influence is the reason XD )
