I just finished book 8 of Death Note ((yeah yeah I know... I'm slow, everyone else has read them a thousand times and I'm only on 8)). I like Near ^^ He hasn't replaced L and Rem in my heart... but he's squished in there with his toys, which makes L unhappy cause he has no room for his cake now.. *hugs L and Near*This is the inked version ^^

Not too big a fan of Near, but I really like the drawing. You did a great job capturing the look of the character, particularly with the hair, and I really lik ethe little details you added (like the toys surrounding him). Very nicej ob.

Meh, my main problem is that I never really felt like I got enough time to really get to KNOW the character, like I did with L. Near never really has much of an emotional connection with anybody, and at times he doesn't even really seem to have that much emotional interest in the Kira case. The closest I got was his relationship with Mello, but even that was really fragmented, and utterly professional. He just didn't feel much like a PERSON to me.
But meh, to each their own. It probably didn't help that L is one of my favorite anime characters, so the character that replaced him was doubtlessly going to fall a little short anyway.

I completely agree. With all of it.
Near just didn't believe anyone was capable. Of anything.
Like when Mello had plannd on getting himself killed in order to help Near catch Kira.
But now seeing someone else's imput on Near really does make him seem inhuman.
My reasons for liking Near is because he's pretty smart, likes toys ((which is cute considering he's like... 17-19ish)) and he's just cute and childish in his looks too.
L is my favorite Death Note character and second favorite anime character.

Yeah, I really don't want it to come across that I hate Near. He was an OK character- his little gimmick with the toys was pretty entertaining, and to some extent, the professionalism did keep him from becoming an L clone. (Although plenty of people accuse him of being that anyway, so it didn't really work too well. 
And honestly, for that last episode to have any tension, you COULDN'T know too much about Near as a character, because for Light's gambit to work, Near would have had to make a critical mistake. If we knew Near better, and knew him as a person, we probably would know that he had an ace up his sleeve, so we would have known that Light was going to lose, so that final twist (which I really did like), would have been far less effective.
You know, I wish they had just taken the route that the two live-action adaptations of Death Note did, because it is really hard to replace L. If you haven't seen the live-action Death Note movies, you really should. They are fantastic. I've seen the first one in stores, and the 2nd and 3rd ones are available on Amazon. So yeah.

You say episode, and I've never seen the anime. I've just got and read all the books.
Near was one of the biggest mysteries besides the shinigami.
But I liked him that way.
I love the live-action movies. Got 'em.
I like the way it ends. At first I was upset it ended when it did because I wanted to see Near and Mello. But now that I've watched it a million times I like the way it ended. Because L's death was intentional! Hurray! He captured the bad guy but sacrificing himself!
I want the third one though.
L could never have been replaced.
Near lacked the emotions that made L who he was.
Plus I still think L was smarter than Near. Light just had the advantage of manipulating Rem through Misa.

Aah, well, the anime is just a condensed version of the manga, really. The dialogue and narrative structure are a bit better at times (for instance when Light kills all the FBI agents in Japan, the story is told in present tense, instead of flashback, so there is a little more tension about Light's plan going wrong), but overall it's basically the game.
Ah, yeah, Near and his motivations were definately one of the biggest mysteries in the second part of the anime. It's what made that second part interesting.
Yeah, the movies are great. I really like the portrayal of L, the actor (forget his name), did a fantastic job.

I liked him quite a bit. I thought he did a great job.
I loved the actor who played Light. He is one of my favorite Japanese actors. He was great in Battle Royale.

Ah yeah, Light's actor was fantastic too. The two just played off each other really well. I really need to see Battle Royale, it keeps on being on my list of "Things to Watch", but it always slips low enough that I haven't bothered.
