Description And now, for the most anti-climactic of anti-climactic returns after a long dA absence. I hope you're all doing well.

So (for reasons better left unexplained) I was feeling nostalgic a few days ago, and my thoughts meandered to the Aladdin television series that aired on Toon Disney....what, 1995 or so? Oh, good Lord, that was fifteen years ago. It wasn't exactly what you could call stellar entertainment, but it was fun. Anybody remember it?

I found the episodes on YouTube, and realized that the two characters who had stuck in my head for all of this time were the antagonists Sadira (a self-taught Witch of the Sand, whose powers were somewhat equivalent to the sandbenders of Avatar with some spells thrown in for good measure) and Mozenrath (a sorcerer/necromancer/notorious complainer.)

I liked Sadira, for all of her failed attempts to win Aladdin over. Her goals were fairly innocuous and understandable as far as the villains went, and you can't help but consider the fact that she was an attractive young woman who'd grown up on the streets ("Locking me up in chains? What were you thinking?! I've been picking locks since I was five!") and had fended for herself since childhood. She had a quirky, hard-headed personality I couldn't help but enjoy. In the end, she got her priorities straightened out and "Witch Way Did She Go" (oh, those titles) is my favorite episode.

Plus, her powers were cool.

Mozenrath, on the other hand, was one of those characters who I (and anyone else) should have detested. He was egotistical, manipulative, temperamental and prone to alternating between boasting about his own abilities and whining about how unfair everything was whenever he lost.

But then there's that episode where you find out that the gauntlet he wears (the source of his powers, which he acquired in order to overthrow the sorcerer who taught him) had eaten away the flesh on his right hand and was draining him like a sort of metaphysical cancer. He wasn't that pale and thin because it fit with his intellectual persona or made him look more villainous: he looked that way because he was physically deteriorating and trying to buy himself more time before he died. Probably one of the only cases in a children's show where the bad guy suffers serious personal consequences for ambition. That huge ego actually bruised pretty easily.

Plus, his dry, cynical sense of humor was amusing. And he owned a flying lamprey. And he made the BEST FACES.

And of course, I always assumed that they got together after the show ended. (Or would have gotten together, rather, had it continued.) Persistence and cheerfulness meets cool pragmatism. CLASSIC.

Alright, I think I've said enough.

Okay I am not nor have I EVER been a fan of this pairing. That being said, if u did a comic with artwork of this caliber (especially that last little bit there) on this story line, i would read it.

This is just gorgeous and so perfect. I'm beginning to have an unnatural fondness for this pairing, just because they make the most awesomest contrast in style EVER. Even their approach to magic is nicely contrasting. Mozenrath depends and actively seeks powerful magical artifacts and Sadira just destroys them whenever they give her the slightest troubles.

I always thought she was the only one among the "good guys" that Mozenrath would be able to respect. She's a magician like him and has had to learn it on her own, with no luck like Aladdin had.

These are just gorgeous, especially the full-body Sadira. It's such a dynamic pose. I gotta learn how to make me one of those.

Thank you so much! I think you've hit the nail on the head in terms of this couple; there's a middle ground for them to meet on, but they'd also balance each other out.

I wish there were more works for this couple! It's terribly underrated.

A surprising amount of people ship this (me included)!

Fun fact: Mozenrath and Aladdin were orginally going to be reveiled as brothers in the movie 'The Fourty Theives.'

How much of a dig at mozenraths ego to know that he was runner up to his brother with Sadira?

Thanks!

Oh WOW . . . I love this! Your style is so different but perfect - the action poses make me green with envy. I mean, the only good action poses I draw usually happen by accident. XD; Sadira's is perfect!

I totally agree with you on Mozenrath - I didn't like him at all at first until the gauntlet episode. I mean, Disney tried to make you hate him - especially with that Dagger Rock episode in which they're like 'Look, he's being a Chauvinist PIIIIIG! Stab him with your hatpins, ladies!' X( But after that episode, and then 'Two to Tango' in which he's actually close to dying (and yet still walking around determined to fix this situation, despite the fact that you know Xerxes probably tried to get him to bed to rest at least a thousand times) you kind of start seeing him as a person who's stronger than he seems.

A heck of a lot stronger than Aladdin. I mean, how many times in the MOVIES alone, does Aladdin break into angsty existential songs or wander away all slumped as if nobody loves him? And all his friends have to sing to him and pet his ego (among other things)?

All Mozenrath has is Xerxes. It seems to me he lets Xerxes comfort him for about 1.3 seconds, then smacks him across the room and goes "That'll do. I'm good now." (But of course if someond like Sadira or Jasmine wanted to coddle him, he'd be sensible and let them for a great deal longer. XD)

I know I'm rambling like whoa, but I really love Sadira too. And I think she, unlike Jasmine, would know or at least quickly figure out how Mozenrath thinks. And she'd be able to play him just as well as he can play anyone else. Jasmine and Aladdin get flustered easily because they are . . . well, you have to admit, they are SHELTERED. Some of the things Aladdin gets upset about . . . I mean, wouldn't he have been kind of jaded to that by now, living on the street that long? Maybe Abu just covered his eyes sometimes.

Sadira on the other hand seems to have the perfect level of cynicism; Mozenrath won't be able to throw her off that easily. If he acts prideful, she could probably play on it until he's doing exactly what she wants him to do, and he thinks it was his idea to begin with. XD; He does seem to have - really deep down - a desire to be liked or admired. He tried to impress Aladdin with his title of Lord, and his power over Destane, (I know it was the introduction episode, but I wonder why Mozenrath would have bothered showing off so much - the writers could have easily made Iago tell Aladdin about Mozenrath instead) and sometimes he tries to make a move on Jasmine as well, though never seriously expecting anything other than scorn from her.

*blinks* holy cheesepuffs, I'm probably exceeding my word limit. XD; But yeah, anyway - mad props! I'm faving this, totally!

Actually, the action poses I draw tend to be pretty accidental too: or just the result of draft after draft after draft of trying to figure out where this hand or that foot should go. My line drawings look like pasta before I clean them up. But thank you very much!

I agree with you on the point about Mozenrath's strength of character. I think, even in kids' cartoons, that's a trait that tends to make the villains kind of admirable in the end: that they never, never, never give up.

Also, I always enjoyed the weird relationship between Xerxes and Mozenrath. You knew Xerxes was unquestionably loyal to and completely worshiped his master, obviously, but Mozenrath wouldn't have kept him around for so long if he didn't (sort of-kind of-deep- deep-deep down) benefit from his company as well. One wonders how he got a flying eel for a familiar: I'll bet he was trying to summon a wyvern or something.

I love your assessment of Sadira and the dynamic she'd have with Mozenrath. I really wish we'd gotten to see them interact. A crack theory I have is that he hired her to dig up his gauntlet after the sprites buried it in the sand in that "Lost City of the Sun" episode (fifteen years later, I still laugh a little too hard at the "Take your best shot" moment) and then they reconnected later on and had random adventures. XD

I love long comments! Thanks again for enjoying and faving the picture!

Dendraica In reply to xcgirl08 [2011-04-15 01:39:30 +0000 UTC]

No problem - I like long comments too. ^_^ I like that theory about the digging up his gauntlet - that could totally work.

Maybe Mozenrath did summon Xerxes, though I had a small fic idea that he went to the Underworld or Sidhe Court and found Xerxes there. Destane probably charged Mozenrath with getting his own familiar, or simply sent him on an errand by himself. Xerxes could also have been Destane's, but he is so loyal to Mozenrath that I don't think that's likely. Because if he betrayed Destane for Mozenrath, then I don't think Mozenrath would keep him around.

Also, I have a big fic in my head that pairs up Moze and Sadira - also, it deals with what Aladdin does when he finally has to take over the throne of Agrabah (he can't be a hero *forever*, because the Sultan isn't going to live forever) and the fact that Aladdin needs to grow up a little. Abis Mal, Mirage, and Fasir have a role in the fic too, so I can't wait to write it.

My overall theory is that while Mozenrath had to give up his right arm for using the gauntlet, he likely had to pay another price to *get* the gauntlet in the first place. When he was talking about a price to pay, he seemed to mean more than the physical price. Still, he claims it was worth it, so what kind of monster was Destane I wonder?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

xcgirl08 In reply to Dendraica [2011-04-15 12:42:40 +0000 UTC]

I wonder about Destane, too. It's implied that Mozenrath was his apprentice (of sorts) but never stated outright, and you have to think about why in the world someone as evil/power-hungry as Destane would risk teaching his powers to someone who might overthrow him. (Not an unfounded suspicion, of course.)

...Although, in some of the summoning circles used in necromancy (it was a rainy day at my university library), a young boy is supposed to used as a medium/host for the spirit you're raising. Maybe that's why Destane brought Mozenrath to the Land of Black Sand in the first place, and then decided that having a second magic user around would be more useful than harmful.

I would LOVE to see that fic. Or even the little one-shot about Xerxes. I hope you decide to write it!

I recently read a Lovecraft story called 'The Nameless Place' and then researched an ancient 'lost' city called Iram (sometimes spelled Irem). According to legend, it was a huge city of pillars that was populated by djinn and afreets, and a safe haven for wizards of the dark arts and necromancers. The diety there was a bull-headed god Moloch who they would sacrifice a young child to - by burning alive. o_O Guess Mozenrath had an ultimatum for behaving for as long as he did.

I found a passsage all about it in a book called' Lost Lands and Forgotten Realms' by Dr. Bob Curran. I am so incorporating it into fic. ^_^

They just belong together
they are like jasmine and al reversed and with magic powers - he's the prince (well, lord, but who cares) and she's the streetrat! Ok, he's evil - but come on, he had a harsh life, some sessions with a shrink and some time with sadira and he sure can be talked into skipping one desert when it comes to ruling.

Loved the films and the television show! I also really liked Sadira, she was so different from Jasmine and gave a different edge to the series, a more tomboyish, less elegant one. I love these two, btw, such an interesting pair with great dynamic I think. Mozenrath is all dark and often gloomy, while Sadira is always hopeful and scheming a way to get Aladdin to notice her. I believe it would be such a great pair. These two need more love, congrats on giving them an awesome homage. I adore the way you drew them, they look so realistic, and the fighting poses are epic! Great job, a nice homage to two great characters.
