Description Happy 2012!

This is my first time ever drawing an eastern dragon. I hope you all enjoy it! Took about 6 or 7 hours, I really got into it, esp the scales.

Watercolor paper, mechanical pencil, watercolor pencils, microns, white gel pen.

My word!
This is really lovely, the colours are very full, without being overpowering and I quite like the serene look on the dragons face.
Like he knows how awesome he/she is....you know just being a dragon and all. Also the scales.....bravo.
The only flaw I could pick up really was perhaps in the face, the eyes seems to just be sitting on it, rather than having an eye socket.
But to be honest that's critique. You have a lovely style!

Thanks so much! Yeah, I think I spent more time on the body and not the face...I usually end up spending too much time on the face, erasing isn't a good thing on this kind of paper. So I probably should've added more shading or something. But thanks for the wonderful critique, I really appreciate it!

Meh, you have quite a unique style, almost storybook like (and I mean that in a good way!) and it works!
no problem!

This is very lovely. The face is really cute I also love the idea of the dragon being small enough to fit on a flowering branch!
My only critique is that the body is really short for a typical eastern/chinese dragon (traditionally their bodies are very long) It would look cool if maybe the body was twisted around the branch, but then again this is fantasy so there's no right or wrong way for a dragon to look. That is my only critique though.

Thanks! I was kind of hoping it would look like a hatchling with the size...but either way, you're right, it should be longer. I really appreciate you're wonderful comment and critique!

Nicely done, but I do have to point out some slight flaws. The claws are a little small, the background could have used some more attention and I think that's it. I do have a few questions though; did you do the scales by hand? What medium is this done in?

I've had some experience in doing such and the piece really is quite well-done. I can't do an actual critique but I'll work withwhat I've got.

Thanks for the input! I don't like referencing from other's work, so I pretty much drew from mind. I really didn't want focus on the background, mainly b/c I wasn't so sure of what to do with it. I agree, I could've drawn the claws a bit longer...The scales were drawn by hand, my wrist about gave up on me halfway through! Watercolor pencils, Micron Pen and white gel pen.

Ah.

I understand the whole wrist giving out on you thing. I usually had large areas of scales set into armor for my really old stuff and I'd have to do a little bit each day.

Great mediums.

They can get the best of you if you let it, but they look so much better in the end. I was really debating if I should scale this guy or not, glad I did!

Thanks!
