Description Some more native North American birds that I added to my life list last year, and decided to do a cut-out of. Clockwise from the top left they are the Chestnut-Backed Chickadee, Wood Duck, Yellow-Rumped Warbler, and Western Tanager. I did most of the work on these over the summer, but finally got around to attaching the feet and bits of twig yesterday.

I attached a push-pin to the back of each of the birds have them scattered across my cork board. It's way too busy for posting a picture on Devart, but in person I like the way they get a little lost in the clutter.

Edit: I can't help but throw some Eels lyrics on here too-

I don't care for walking downtown
Crazy auto-car gonna mow me down
Look at all the people like cows in a herd
Well, i like
Birds

I love this how long does it take you to do this with such perfection?

Hmm. I guess it depends. I think the smaller birds probably took about an hour or two.

I love the detail in these birds! I can see that you worked to make the colors and patterns true to life, so that these birds are not just fantastic art but accurate ornithological illustrations as well!

Thanks very much! I tried to make them as accurate as possible, but still somewhat abstracted. I have been getting into bird watching lately, so this was another way that I can teach myself identification. It already worked today in fact. I couldn't tell if a bird I was seeing was violet-green swallow or tree swallow - then I remembered the cut-out I had worked on.

Thanks! I have been thinking about doing a robin (or a varied thrush). They are just so classic looking. Now I'm trying to decide between an American or European Robin.

Wow, these are beautiful - I especially love the colors. And I'm really impressed that you've been able to balance the simplified/stylized nature of your papercraft art while also still making these birds look very naturalistic. Lovely work!

The pushpin idea is truly inspired.

[still distracted by textures though. don't mind me...]

WonderDookie In reply to KreepingSpawn [2014-01-22 22:03:03 +0000 UTC]

Yeah. I have a whole lot of stuff on my cork boards, so it's nice having that bit of extra decoration.

haha. If it makes you feel any better, the textures are more pronounced in this than in person. I just have to raise the contrast a bit so that the layers are more obvious.

I think I'd probably have to get Yoko Ono to spit on them, or submerge them in melted glacier water before I could get them in MOMA.

You could probably train them to come to you.

WonderDookie In reply to WidowShark [2014-01-24 18:56:12 +0000 UTC]

I'm not usually up there for long enough for that (my family's property is about a ten hour drive from where I live). But maybe I could train the mourning doves outside my apartment to come to me? haha.
