Description This piece was created especially to enter in *mizzd-stock 's current running contest. To qualify, I was to use a piece of her figure stock and any type of reptiles I wished, here created with some of *miss69-stock 's awesome snake brushes, so this was the result. This character is meant to be something of a dark witch of the shadows. You'd think that someone who likes to make fantasy scenes and characters as much as I do would have done some kind of witch by now, but I haven't until now. I like to think she's at one with her reptile familiars, and perhaps the enchanted skull she is using to cast her spell is her means of calling them to her side when they are needed.

I like this. I have a question though, about all your work. Do you completely repaint everything digitally, or do you just manipulate some things? It's hard for me to tell, I hope you don't mind me asking I really do like this ^^

All my stuff is really a combination of the two. How much manipulation is involved vs. how much digital painting varies with each piece. Usually though, I tend to leave things like backgrounds or clothing pretty much alone as far as overpainting. I just kind of shade what's already there to help it match the elements I do paint in. I always always repaint skin, eyes, and especially hair though. The rest of it just depends.

I am not that familiar with brushes but have seen some really nice pieces done solely with brushes.
So excuse my ignorance on this question. You stated the snakes were made from brushes.
Colored? Or you did the colorization?
I am prompted to set about some experimentation with them.
For some strange reason I had this little voice in my head saying'
'the use of brushes is cheating'.
I cannot explain that thought and certainly cannot justify it.
So it is off to my stash of resources (we all have those, right?)
and time to set about using some brushes.
Experimentation, a very necessary and enjoyable part of life.

BTW, nice piece, gotta love the hair, the concept and an
excellent blending of all elements

I used to kind of feel the same way about brushes, but really they are similar to just using snakes from stock photos or anything else as a basis for the animals in the painting. The brushes were basically image stamps that I repainted and shaded the same as I did the stock figure and background to get the effect you're seeing here.

Yes, that was my final conclusion: Brushes -vs- Stock images = the same.
I need to look at this piece again and the credits as there are a number of current running contests and a snake lady is necessary.
Thanks

quite a thought-provoking title. adds new meaning to the way the scene is interpreted. i love the composition btw. very original choice and combination of elements.

it's also quite obvious you had fun with this...

Thanks, man! I'm getting custom-made brushes from *miss69-stock though, and that's nothing to sneeze at for sure. Her brushes rock, and this will be the first time anyone has made a personal set just for me, so I'm excited.

It truly delivers the message and you can find yourself memorized by the way the figure appeals to the moment with the serpant. Toying with vanity as any serpant could! The whole scene just brings out a memorable sight that I can only applaude you for all the effort you placed in designing this. I hope your efforts bring you much success within the contest. Good luck my friend.

very creative stuff here. I love all the snakes and sinister atmosphere. looove the way you paint hair. wish i could draw long wispy hair like that .. everytime i try it my lines end up jagged, not smooth. even with a tablet

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

wolfmorphine In reply to spiritsighs [2006-02-18 05:06:07 +0000 UTC]

It just takes lots of practice, but yeah... it's lots easier with a tablet. I usually just try to stay really patient and use small brushes. Sometimes I use hairbrushes to kind of help me get the shape and then go over it, using it as a guide, too. That can help a lot when you can't really "see" the hair in your head.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

spiritsighs In reply to wolfmorphine [2006-02-19 04:41:16 +0000 UTC]

i think my hand is just too darn shaky im not sure what it is. but ill keep practicing now that i have my tablet. it was nearly impossible for me w/ a mouse. yes using hair brushes always makes it so much easier for me to get an idea of the "shape" and "sections" of the hair.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

wolfmorphine In reply to spiritsighs [2006-02-22 20:33:25 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I had the same problem for a long time. It helps to use the really small brushes and practice making quicker strokes. The quicker your strokes are, the smoother the hair will look and the more movement it will have. You can always go in with the erase tool and clean up after yourself later.
