Description [EDIT]: I have a name for this species now :'D

So I've had this species for a looooong, long time now, and I've finally come to ' perfect it', if you will. This is 'me' as a member of the species, to show an example of how things work. They can basically be any color scheme, any type of skin, fur, or scale coverage, and have any type of hair, ears, or horns. However, they all have mask like faces, two sets of wings, horns, and three pairs of legs.

How it works out is the first pair in front have opposable thumbs, these are hands. The second pair is for combat, climbing, running, and to support the body when talking with the first set. The back legs function as back legs would usually. The back feet also have two 'thumb' claws in the back, for support when climbing.

Every creature's mask is never the same, each marking is unique to its own face. I'm planning to make a whole reference to this species, but uh...There's only one problem....

I have noo idea what I'm going to call it. Suggestions?

Oh yeah, and p.s. I love butt-fur. Can't you tell?

Ohhh, very creative~!! I wish I could help you with a name, but I have to admit: the one reason I haven't really uploaded anything to Species-Directory is because I can't name it

Oh! I have already figured out a name, thank you :3 You just reminded me that I need to edit this to let people know XD

The species is referred to as Kozeiyed, or Kozei for short.

And have no worries! I know you'll find a perfect name for your species. It'll come to you when it's perfect :3

I think I paired it with Latin and Afrikans... But for the life of me I can't remember what it's supposed to mean. I'm sure it means something like 'masked entity' or something similar.

My mother is from South Africa so I just asked her for ideas XD

You could always name them after the aboriginal god "Baiame"- he's the sky god of rain and patron of shamans. Amongst the natives (even today) it's sort of taboo to mention his name in public.

He also has a son named "Daramulum"- maybe that could be another one of the species of your creature, since he is also a sky/weather god and one of the deities of the moon.

Wolf-of-the-Leaf In reply to Tara-bleArt [2008-12-28 20:58:37 +0000 UTC]

Ooh, that's a really cool idea. However, even though I'm kind of reluctant to call it anything that already exists because I'm going to put these guys into a comic my girlfriend and I are making.

Is it really a taboo to mention that name in public? That shocked me, in an awe inspiring way.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Tara-bleArt In reply to Wolf-of-the-Leaf [2008-12-29 02:04:48 +0000 UTC]

I don't see why it would be a problem- you could always say they were named after the god because they are like the physical form he takes or maybe his token animal or something. (Like how the hawk was synonymous with the god Horus in Egyptian mythology)

And yup, it is still taboo to speak of him/his name in public. I imagine the shaman can speak of him amongst themselves, but never out in the open where the average villager could hear.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Wolf-of-the-Leaf In reply to Tara-bleArt [2008-12-29 02:12:14 +0000 UTC]

Well that's the thing. In the comic they're not /just/ animals, they're more like ancient beings themselves. The original adaptations of the elements, but in physical form. More look like the element they take over, some look less like it. So, if anything, they're representing the elements.

And wow, that's kind of cool. Some things that are sacred in the "modern" sense really aren't, but not allowed to mention a specific name, wow.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Tara-bleArt In reply to Wolf-of-the-Leaf [2008-12-29 05:22:11 +0000 UTC]

Ah- I kinda figured they weren't 'animals' exactly, but sentient. 'Token animal' was just an example I was using. ^_^

If you're looking for naming them after elements there's always something like this in Kamilaroi:
Storm- Walawala
Wind- Maayirr
Whirlwind- Buuli, etc.

Sense you like the idea of saying Baiame's name as taboo maybe these creatures could be those he made to watch over the elements for him- kinda like in Greek mythology where Hera made Hydra, etc, etc- and the mask could represent his preference for anonymity. But I don't know- I'm just blowing smoke. XD

Wolf-of-the-Leaf In reply to Tara-bleArt [2008-12-29 05:51:59 +0000 UTC]

The word Walawala makes me giggle XD

But that's definitely an idea to think about and play with. Thanks for the info!

That's very neat. I love your art.

It's a good idea to figure out where the creature is from, and then to name it.
I like the thought of it coming from some place like Australia. China seems too over used in my opinion.
Like every strange mythical creature I see comes from Asia.
But that's my opinion.

The creature also makes me think of Egypt for some reason.

If I were good with names, I would suggest a few.

Wolf-of-the-Leaf In reply to Retho [2008-05-22 20:54:05 +0000 UTC]

Haha, yeah...Asia is kind of over used, so I'll probably go with Australia. The thing I figured out, though, I'm going to have three different kinds of this species: One for the land, one for the water, and one for the cold. This thing is becoming bigger and bigger...Ugh.

And thank you

Holy shit, that is amazing!

I definitely like the mask faces, it reminds me of creatures I've seen in my dreams before.

Unfortunately I am name retarded, but I'm sure that someone else will think of something cool!

Something foreign and mystic sounding would be cool.

Also, your style reminds me a lot of tradition Asian art. ^_^ You have very nice skills.

I was just speaking to someone else about the origin of the name, I could see this coming from China or Australia...Not so much Japan. And yes, I love my mask attribute, thats the part of this creature that's always been with it through the years of changes.

And thank you very much! Your compliments always make me blush.

nhyon! This is spectacular <3 I rarely find made up creatures that I like, however this is wonderful! The amount of characteristics and details you put in the species is surprising, I'm tempted to draw a version of this animal too.

About the name though... it depends on what sort of origin you'd like it to have. Depending on its originating land, the name would differ in sound. Which now leads me to the curiosity question, where do you think it'd come from? It does remind me of Japanese kirin though.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Wolf-of-the-Leaf In reply to annamage [2008-05-21 20:55:57 +0000 UTC]

Very good observation about the name idea, it does have to have an origin place... I don't even know why that didn't cross my mind. Japan would be a good place of origin since there are so many mythological creatures that come from there with some of these characteristics. I could /maybe/ imagine this in either China or Australia though. Hmm..

And man, go right ahead! I'd love to see people's creations of my creature as themselves....Makes me all bubbly inside
