Description X3 so a couple years ago I read a story and through it met a girl who has since proved to be the best friend I was always waiting for Not only that but she's also been THE influence that brought me to some of the best experiences I've had since that time! And has encouraged me and inspired to return to my own art and writing when I had let it fall by the wayside - and now, between the art, the writing, the editing and the friends, I can say her influence has brought me some of my greatest joys.

About a month ago she celebrated her 25th birthday, and though late, this is her gift. I hope you love it, Chrissy You're beautiful.

Materials: 0.9, 0.7 and 0.5 mechanical pencils, a clicky eraser, an eraser pencil and kneaded rubber eraser. Used *gabbyd70 's tutorials to help me!

I can never remember if I've already commented..so if this turns out to be a double post, I apologize.

Wish, how long have you been drawing? O.O Because I don't remember you ever getting this good! I'm very impressed!

One of the things that stand out the most is her eyes. They're so cheerful and full of spirit. I also adore how you draw hair, and you payed good attention to the details. Plus the shading is very nice and smooth. You are defiantly on the right road to being a great artist. ^^

Wonderful and outstanding job!

God...I'm in quite a commenting mood today. O.O

Teehee, girly, you commented first! But I SUPER appreciate coming back with this in-depth comment...it means a lot to me <3 no apologies from you about that! Just thanks from me!

I've been drawing since I was little but often just get frustrated and go...."argh what's the point, I'm not good enough and not going to be!" But since this one was for someone I love, it was totally worth putting aside my inhibitions and just trying out what I hoped I could do...and putting the time into it that it deserved. So it's definitely a giant leap forward in my artistic achievement! But I hope for this to be my standard of quality from here on out, even if it's on more "sketchy" things.

Though I'm not much of an artist myself, I just know that you can NEVER give up if you really enjoy drawing and painting. You gotta stay positive with your work and keep practicing. That way you'll just keep getting better and better!

It's true! And I've been learning that even my good drawings have a "holy crud what have I done this is awful!!!!!!" @.o" phase before they're done

I have had that feeling SO many times, Especially when I do some of my portraits. It's the mouth I have a problem with, I just can't get it right. XD But as I said, practice makes perfect.

I don't believe there is ever "perfect" in art it's the lack of perfection that's so fascinating! But practice does make pleasing <.< <3

Extraordinary. I looked at this and thought...that's a photograph, then realized it wasn't, then looked at it again and thought, it MUST be a photograph. Amazing intricate detail. I can tell you've poured a lot of time and love into this. I am particularly impressed with the eyes, and also the teeth! It's almost impossible to draw two-dimensional teeth and make them look like they belong on a drawing of a face, and you make it look like child's play. Well done.

Another part of my brain is going "Hmm, so now we see the face behind the mask. I suppose someone who writes such fascinating stories must be as beautiful as her writer's soul."

Child's play? I'm glad it looks like that! I spent so much time on every little bit of this thing but that's what makes me love it so much

Ohhhh, it's true...Chrissy is so full of light and love in goodness and fun(/sass XD) in her writing, in her art, in appearance, in the way she acts and everything ~ I mean we all have our faults but I am lucky to have such a wonderful girl as my best friend X3

YOU DID AWESOME ON THIS!

You know? She... she almost looks like me...

Well, obviously not everything, but the teeth and nose mostly... O_O it's kind of creepy...

BUT AWESOME ANYWAY. You did a great job. A wonderful present, to an equally wonderful friend.

Interesting! =O I actually feel the need to redo her nose...I'm very proud of this but also have become increasingly aware of the imperfections and problems - which is good! It means I'm growing as an artist!

Thank you so much!

It's great that you have a friend like that... it's a rare thing to be sure, which makes it incredibly precious. There is such clear attention to detail put into this that just shows how important she is to you. It's a great picture; you did a wonderful job. ^^

0o0 realistic can be warped to one's pleasure, like for example, edit out nosehairs, or something like that... 8) photorealistic is has no edits like that. 030 it's just completely what you see!

One word. Amazing!

I like how you have softened/faded out the background. It brings the attention and focus to the lovely lady in the foreground. Which helps to emphasize the details you’ve put into the hair, and into the shading. I love the way you have drawn Chrissy’s eyes, it’s really stands out. The detail in her irises is amazing. I can tell you've put a lot of time into the drawing.

beautiful drawing!

WishIWould In reply to squashed-orange-2008 [2009-11-30 22:39:37 +0000 UTC]

Geeee thank you so much! Yeah, I was really scared of the bg...I did it last >.> and was like, "you know, it's worth having there for light source and so she's not just a floating person..." but kinda did it detailless and blurry on purpose both cause I was afraid the details of the person would get lost in the bg, and cause I was ready to be done <_<

Teehee, I did her eyes first X3 she's got GORGEOUS eyes. I couldn't convey in b&w what a standout BLUE they are, but I wanted to at least TRY to show...I kept feeling disappointed that nothing can compare to the real thing but I suppose this is appropriate >_>; teehee.

I've always loved doing eyes, but a couple drawings before starting this I found a PWNsome tutorial for eyes! It kinda helped me make some breakthroughs in prep of this picture! See here! ~> [link]

squashed-orange-2008 In reply to WishIWould [2009-12-01 22:08:22 +0000 UTC]

Your welcome!

Yeah. I think it's always best to have a background, not to much detail in it (unless it's a landscape picture ), just enough to suggest there is something there.

Thanks for the eye tutorial!

The part I always find hardest to draw though is the nose. Every time I try to draw a nose it just ends up looking rubbish.

But if everyone's drawings looked exactly like the real thing, then there would never be improvement, and therefore no challenge.

Aww! Yeah I struggle with noses, too. Noses and chins!

It's true! I like realism but in some ways I really enjoy cartoon realism because it kind of has more leeway for my style? Aw, I just love both

I used to. Charcoal and Watercolour. Before I stopped doing art as a subject, (due to arguing...I mean disagreeing with the teacher to much, causing the teacher to get angry at me ). Now I only seem to do art if I feel in an art mood

Kishmet [2009-11-30 05:23:33 +0000 UTC]

Fffff! That's good!

The proportions and details are all dead on and those shadows and highlights are really convincing.
The subtle details are all really nice too, like the slight creases of skin around the smile and the way her hair feels full and soft, not flat.

The subtle hint of a background is nicely employed as well, and really completes it.

I think photo-realism may be your calling...

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

WishIWould In reply to Kishmet [2009-11-30 07:20:58 +0000 UTC]

Geeeeeee thank you! X3 As the artist I could point out some things that aren't quite exact to the photograph but I'll refrain <.<

Teehee!!! I spent a long time on the shadows and highlights on her face...wanted to get them just right to create the proper shape! It took a lot of erasing and redoing and shifting around, but huzzah

Thank you! I did the bg last of all and was afraid it would ruin it but keeping it "fuzzier" than the portrait made it pretty easy to do! it was probably the fastest part!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Kishmet In reply to WishIWould [2009-12-02 05:47:03 +0000 UTC]

Weeell, obviously any changes you made from the photograph were for the better eh? It's totally a believable piece of art.

I can definitely appreciate the effort you've put in! It goes to show the dedication and integrity to getting the piece 'right'. :3

And yes! Putting in the background was definitely a good idea! Keeping it slightly 'fuzzy' kind of creates the sense of depth and pulls the focus to the figure.

I'm sure she must be really happy with the present! I hope it's framed!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

WishIWould In reply to Kishmet [2009-12-02 08:23:55 +0000 UTC]

Oh, heavens no XD The changes from the photo were purely cause I couldn't quite convey good things IN the photo. I'm very proud of this piece, but yar >.> I can admit that there are some things I couldn't quite capture perfectly, though I'd never guess anyone to pinpoint them necessarily

Teehee! thank you X3

I never even THOUGHT about the sense of depth or focus in the sense of camera focus, lol! Well, actually I did...but a lot of times with art or writing, I "think" in terms of feelings instead of words, if that makes sense? Lol. So I "felt" that but didn't work it in connection to depth/focus

Geehee! No it's still in my sketch pad for now, but I SHALL be framing it and giving it to her when I see her live this New Year's Eve!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Kishmet In reply to WishIWould [2009-12-05 04:19:49 +0000 UTC]

Haha, yeah that happens a lot! You look back at something and think, "Oh that worked out well." Even though you didn't make much of it at the time.
So I think I know what you mean. XD

Oh, I'm sure she'll be happy to have it!
