Description "But beyond the hill that was once the capital of the north there is a little grove of trees surrounding a sparkling pool. And it is said that the pool sprung from the tears shed by Deirdre for Naise and his brothers..." ---From Deirdre and the Sons of Usnach (The Third Sorrow of Irish Storytelling) by Michael Scott

A painting for =greenfroggies for winning first place with her entry for my Drawing the Names of Galway contest. She requested a painting depicting Deirdre, who was the most beautiful woman in the world, mourning over the death of her beloved Naoise. Some versions of the legend say that two trees grew from where they were buried, intertwining. Others state that a grove grows from where Naoise and his brothers lie, and one single weeping willow stands over the grave of Deirdre.

This piece is a union between both legends, using a bit of artistic license as well.

9X12 inches, watercolor.

This is more beautiful than I could have hoped, I LOVE the knotted branches and blue to green background fade is gorgeous. The details of all the leaves and the folds in her dress are beautiful, and her expression really is just how I imagined it

Thank you so much!

Have you ever read the Sevenwaters Trilogy? I enjoyed them. I had to buy the first book three times (I gave two away as gifts to my fellow bookworms). Deirdre is often mentioned in that one.

Ah, I haven't read that trilogy. I found that Deirdre is a fairly common character in tales.

Thanks - it's hard to depict the 'most beautiful woman in the world,' so I gave her a simple beauty...if I had done a portrait, then perhaps I would have gone farther with her face.
