Description Commission for *Mekania - her beautiful demon-goddess, Mekania.

This is watercolor and my first time doing a building for a background. It's meant to be more wash-like than actually fully detailed (so as to put the focus on the character in the foreground). In case you were wondering what the building is supposed to be, it's the Paris Opera House.

Watercolor, 10X12" cold-press 140lb watercolor paper.

The colors are awesome. I like this red.
And the hair's arabesques... Her dress is greatly drawn too.
Your coloring is really impressive.

Mmmmm red. Those colors are perfect for her personality...so striking, beautiful, and deadly^^ I think you did really well on the background with that subtle shade of warm grey and yellow. There are a few distracting elements to this, like that bright spot on the right that I think interrupts the nice wash effect of the background and makes your eye look there. Also, the way that highlight is shaped next to the shadows makes it obvious you were trying to shape the lines to the hair instead of having a nice congruous background. Maybe a little fix up there would be good before you send it off? (If you can work that close in without messing too much up). Her skin is also very muddled in the facial region giving it a textured instead of fleshy softness (maybe due to paint?) and her hand holding the fan seems unnaturally bent to the fan's form...as if she has no bones in her wrist. I'd say refining the bones of her wrist would help alot, along with her fingers which also seem oddly placed on the hand. That's all very knitpicky and I understand this is a small picture that's been finished so it's hard to correct, if you chose to at all. Hopefully, this info will be good for the future. All in all, she's still beautiful

Oh, and another thing - that 'bright area' to the right is due to me trying to get the brightness as close to the original. Otherwise, everything else would have been too dark. That highlight is due to altering the brightness and contrast of the other portions of the piece *kicks her piece of crap scanner*

hmm yeah....scanners have a habit of eating all the subtleties of watercolor strokes. This is one of those cases I wish I could see the original piece to compare. C'est lavi.

actually I looked it up before writing it and that's the spelling that popped up on this foreign language site. Go figureXD

*giggles* Trust me, it's c'est la vie.

Damn wrong translations. They're so fun to play with, especially if you translate something, and then re-translate it back to the first language. It messes it up sooo bad XD

I really have no idea what you mean about the 'highlight next to the shadows which makes it obvious (I was) trying to shape the lines to the hair instead of having a nice congruous background." I really have no idea what you were trying to say XD

Though, I agree with the hand and the face. There's really nothing I can do about the hand (her fingers are too long, too) and the face is 'textured' because of the size and tooth of the paper. That's what happens when you use a roughly textured paper (Canson 140 lb cold press) and make something that small.

If you look really closely at where her hair ends and overlaps the background on the right, you have the shadow of a pillar going vertical across the picture. When that particular shadow goes 'underneath' the ends of the hair, it's not straight, but uneven which really makes that particular area stand out even more besides the bright highlight between that shadow and the statue there on the right side of the piece. My eye keeps going right to that mistake since because of the bright spot I mentioned and the crooked background. I know it'd be a pain to straighten that shadow out, but I think it would greatly improve the piece. Maybe it's just the contrast you used, but from how that bright area is, all it seems to need is a little more gradiation into the white so it's not so stark a contrast against the rest. Gotta love cold press paper

I see what you mean now. I was planning on fixing that crooked 'beam' before. I know what the problem is - see how on the far left, there's no 'thin beam'? It seems to just become wall? Once I put shadow there, it will fix the problem. Without the beam 'shadow,' it gives the illusion that it's lower than the rest.
