Description The Egyptian Goose, Alopochen aegyptiaca (its name means Egyptian Fox-Goose), is an abundant and well-known African bird.  It paddles on the water but feeds on grass and lush vegetation on the riverbanks and lakeshores. Though goose-sized-and-like, it's actually a large shelduck, related to the shelducks of the genus Tadorna found from Africa to Australia.  It was revered by the Egyptians and potrayed in their tombs.  Sadly, with the growing human population and intensive agriculture, the species is now gone from most of Egypt.  But birds escaped from waterfowl collections have formed feral populations in Europe and America.  Acrylic painting.

I think I've seen some of these here in central florida that I thought were just hybrids. I recognize the coloring and dark eye spot. Interesting how many non-native species we have, although not in a good way in most cases. Cool bird, though. And another excellent painting.

Thanks!  I hope they're not causing ecological problems over there.

I don't think we have enough of the geese here. It's mostly our cold-blooded invaders that cause such a big problem. They thrive in our tropical climate. South Florida now has python hunting season because so many escaped (or freed) snakes have now bred and taken over the everglades.

I see them in South Florida quite often. I'm almost certain they have a breeding population here, now.

I don't expect a goose to look wise, but this one certainly does. It has a bearing that cannot be denied and you've captured that bearing expertly.
