Description Charassognathus gracilis, 'slender notched-jaw', is one of the earliest and most primitive members of the Cynodonta, the most advanced group of the proto-mammals that also includes all true mammals.  This animal, from known remains about the size of a large rat, lived in the Late Permian period, about 260-255 million years ago, in South Africa.  The features of its skull indicate that the cynodonts may be closely related to, if not being descended from, another successful group of proto-mammals, the Therocephalians.

Yes, people tend to think it's all leathery wings and scales and monochromatic because all we have is bones. They tend not to see the animals as personalities but as endlessly vicious teeth and mindless killing. It was obviously very different from the Jurassic park films and all the negative dino hype.
