Description Yukari by *butterfrog , coloring by me. This is my first time coloring a Hugo piece. Be gentle.

Original piece is here: [link]

~theEldritchMrShiny also did a version, located here: [link]

Lemme know if I missed anyone else's version; I'll post up a link in an edit.

I went with red for the armor because, for some reason, I always thing of samurai armor in red hues. Haven't read the original commission, though, so I coulda totally messed up on this one. I might add more info sometime later, but I can't think right now.

Thanks! It was a day's worth of work, but it was worth it.

Looks awesome! The red and black do work very well together

As an aside: Yukari is actually a Unicorn clan samurai from L5R so her clan colours are generally purple and white. It's not mentioned in the description of Butterfrog's piece though, as it was just to be a greyscale. I like seeing all the different colours people have come up with though!

Thanks! It's a classic color combo.

Actually, I could redo her in Unicorn Clan colors. Probably shoulda asked first. Sorry. We'll see if anyone else does her in purple in white, and if not (and if I've got the time), I'll do another version of her.

Hey, absolutely no worries. As I said, I hadn't given any colour details in the description and I liked seeing the way she looked in different colours in any case.

absolutely love the end product

crimson red for the blood of fallen enemies!

didn't thought in the golden details... I love them...

I saw originally that she reminded me of an ulfen warrior using a samurai armor... you dispelled such illusion... she is definitively a tian

the lile scar was really a nice touch... do you really wantus to be gentle?

Thanks!

Feel free to criticize all you wish, though. By all means. Just remember, Yukari has two swords and the skill to wield them with deadly effect.

Why is it that whenever you do anything, it always comes out twice as good as what I do?

Well, I am using a $700 copy of Photoshop CS 4. It is hideously powerful; coloring Hugo's stuff, while barely within my skill set, is a joke for that program. If it was a Microsoft product, there'd probably be some little animated paintbrush cartoon mocking me the whole time I was coloring.

It appears you're trying to color a black and white illustration! Would you like me to make a template for that, you hack artist? Um, no thanks, Photoshop. Are you sure? 'Cuz you're rally bad at this! I mean, did you just forget what layer you're on? Yes, I did, Photoshop, but I'll fix it later. I can fix it right now! Hell, just let me do it. You go in the corner and cry. I'll make a little 'ding' noise when I'm done. Thanks, Photoshop... sob...

Well, there's also the quality loss a re-scan creates. Definitely causes a loss of detail.

Cool! How long did it took you to color this? I should start trying! I sure like the armor in red !

WhoDrewThis In reply to butterfrog [2009-03-10 00:52:30 +0000 UTC]

I started the night before last, and colored it on-and-off through yesterday and this morning. I'd guess it was about 4 hours or so, 6 hours maximum. It's the first of your drawings I've tried coloring, so it took me a while to get the hang of it, and I had a 4-in-the-morning layer slip-up that cost me some time; if I end up doing more of them, it'll probably take less time.

Glad you like it! Red seems to be an iconic "samurai armor" color, so it's the first one I thought of. Green or blue might also look pretty good. I do like Shiny's yellow, though. Reminds me of the Wasp Clan from Legend of the Five rings.

Jeps, I think red was the right way to go classic and neutral. I'ld love to color the pieces, but adding 4-6 hours to each drainw would be too much right now... so I guess they'll stay B&W for a while

Well, the more you do 'em, the faster it gets, trust me. I'm coloring my gnolls right now, and it's almost become an assembly-line process. If I keep at it all day today, I'll have the whole gnoll set colored and edited by tomorrow morning. Which will be just in time to go back to the day job! YAY!

I might do some of your other pieces some time, particularly any that are my characters. Wink wink.

But I hear you on the time issue. If I was just doing black and white pieces, I'd probably be done with all the sets about now. So far, it looks like I'll be a bit behind until I get really good at it (or start drawing simpler stuff).

Heh, its funny how fast the time became an issue... Thank gosh huh? Would you have imagined that we would be what we are doing for whom we are doing it right now just a few months ago when we where happy doodling for fun? And now look at us doing it also for dough! See? lets keep it up!

Lemme clear some of the agenda a bit and I'll do a really special PC for you, maybe in a couple weeks

WhoDrewThis In reply to butterfrog [2009-03-10 06:28:42 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, it's been crazy. I'm super-excited, but it's been pretty stressful, too, and having to essentially chain myself to the computer while everyone else is hanging out in the living room having fun kinda sucks, but once I'm selling these things, it'll all be worth it.

EEE! I can't wait. Don't forget Ben's commission, BTW. I really want to see that, probably as much as Ben does.

I'll let him know.

Oh, and I just printed a test batch tonight. The assembly setup's gonna have to go through some work, but I've got a handful of pretty, double-sided gnolls to show off, so I'm gonna try to borrow Ben's digital camera tomorrow and take some photos. Some of them might be hard to make out the details on (the flind leader guy is really dark and spooky, so Ben's camera might not pick up all the details), but at least you'll get to see what's coming!

WhoDrewThis In reply to butterfrog [2009-03-10 23:54:43 +0000 UTC]

No real deadline, per se, but I really want them up and ready by the time Howl of the Carrion King comes out. It probably won't happen that way, though, but I'm doing the work on them every spare minute I get (I spent twelve hours yesterday working in Photoshop; saw the program every time I closed my eyes). Sadly, too much time was wasted working on some of the smaller bits and not focusing on getting as much made as possible.

But the gnolls are currently on track, so they'll hopefully be out and available in about two weeks. I might skip some of the non-essential steps (like a cover image) and just get them out there.
