I absolutely love the details in the wind and the position the figure is in. I want to get into making figures from clay but I don't know much on how to start so I like looking at your(and other artists)'s figures.

I find a lot of people who make figures tend to try to keep everything hush hush about how they make their figures. it can get very frustrating for a newbie such as myself. So, thank you very much for your kindness.

Thanks! Figures are a lot of fun. These wings are reinforced with paper coated in liquid sculpey. I don't know if I'd use it again though, they started to crack a little over time.

Really? I have been told that I am not baking long enough. I am following the directions on the box. Most of the people seem to be baking at temperature, but for an hour or more, up to four hours, then leaving it in the oven overnight to cool. To make sure the plasticine is baked out of it or it has a tendancy to become brittle and crack. Who Knew?

Hmm... I've never baked anything that long. I haven't had any trouble with cracking in all-clay pieces and I have some that are years and years old. The only reason this one cracked was because I used paper (cardstock) as a framework. Moisture got inside and expanded things.

I have start a figure myself and I have been baking it randomly where ever I need to solidify the clay. So far I have baked it about an hour or more with no burning at all! It really makes things easier for work.

Oh, I see what you mean. I've baked things in stages, just never several hours at any one time. Can't wait to see the finished product!

I finished it, but have not done the finishing stages. I baked it around ten times, legs, then chest, then head, then arms, then hands.. It didn't burn, it came out solid and I am very pleased!

Thanks! Yes, I did. The wings have stiff paper inside them, although I they're kind of splitting apart now because I didn't reinforce the edges enough.

Oooh, do you use those dentist's tools for scraping teeth for the finer details? Or what? I'm so interested in your work.

Haha, I do as a matter of fact. Although, my favorite tool is actually a waxing instrument. There was one issued to me in my drawer this year in dental school and I was so excited to get another one! I'm such a nerd...

Wow! This is really cool, How long does it take you to shape so much detail into the figures? o_o

Oh, wow. This is so well done. How on earth did you ever bake him like that?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Whitness In reply to rebootmaster2001 [2004-01-06 04:14:23 +0000 UTC]

thanks! I baked him a lot. his body and each wing were separately cooked, then I put him all together. It's time consuming but much better than pulling a warped, melty pile out of the oven after hours of work.
