Description This is a birthday gift for my friend Mana-Ramp-Matoran . I chose to draw his character Maristela because she has beautiful blue hair full of stars and I was intrigued by her celestial theme. Bionicle MOC: Maristela The Astral-Mage.

Translating the MOC to an organic character design was challenging, and I'm not sure about the angle on her staff, but I tried my best and added a bit of my own flair to the details on her costume. The reason why I gave her such big eyelashes was to draw more attention to her hair, which is one of the most eye-catching parts of her design in my opinion (and it was a lot of fun to draw all the curls!).

While drawing this, I listened to a lot of A Capella music.

Thank you! Hair is one of my favorite things to draw, especially curly hair like this.

When I read A capella I keep thinking is classic music and forgetting there are a lot of more recent songs in that style!

Love how Lego Elves-ish does this drawing look, you could put it on the curent boxes and get everyone crazy trying to find her minidoll xD As stated many times, this is an amazing piece of art, I really like the glow and work you put on the hair. The sceptre is very well done and I love how you drew the ribbon... And gosh those eyelashes. She's so beautiful! Magnificent work, dear <3

P.S: probably if I commented first all that fuss didn't happen, but... Well, I tend to delay a lot in answers and comments xD

Thanks, I appreciate the feedback! I hadn't thought of Lego Elves but that is actually a cool parallel and I always liked their box art style. Her eyes were a lot of fun to work on, with all the sparkles. XD

I really love A Capella music-- it's amazing what the human voice is capable of. Take this, for example: www.youtube.com/watch?v=QwBaSo…

It's more amazing when it's everything done just by one person, since (s)he had to syncronize with him/her past self, which is not as easy as sync with people around you and a director controlling everything. I don't usually listen to A Capella, but I still find it impressive. <3

Inversely, I can't stand A Capella music. As a musician to me it just makes me wish someone was playing an actual instrument. It infuriates me.

I can understand your point of view. Although I have to say, I am also a musician and hearing A Capella makes me wish I could sing like that! Reminds me of this meme: pics.me.me/when-a-song-has-dif…

Oh yeah? What instrument do you play?

Um I guess. This meme isn't for me I guess.

I am a pianist and I can also strum a few tunes on an Appalachian lap dulcimer.

I'm the kind of person who sings along with any song that comes on. I suppose the meme only makes sense in that regard. XD

Nice! I took piano back in high school and one class for about two weeks when I tried college. So I'm not practiced at it, but I do know how to play piano. I can do the basic fingering to play a scale, and a few super basic chords. I want to get back into being able to play it and to learn actual songs but music fell by the wayside when college went belly up and I couldn't find local musicians to play with.

Oh I get the meme, I just didn't find it funny or relatable.

Wow--your colors and glow effects continue to astound and impress! Interesting how the Lego pieces still show up in the staff, or at least they are hinted at.

Fantastic job!

For some reason, I can't help but think of Gems from Steven Universe as I look at this...

Thanks! The staff was tough to draw but I was basically trying to translate the more "Lego-y" look into something that could be built by a magic-staff-craftsman (in theory).

maybe Rose Quartz's glorious curls are invading my mind at a subconscious level!

OMG RAINE ITS SO PRETTY!!!! You did a magnificent job with her.

I really love the changes and flairs you made to her. How her shoulders are bare now. I might actually have to go back and see if I can incorporate that into the MOC because she's due for a revamp. The staff looks great. I don't know if the angle is right either, but I like it. I like the white on the lower sleeves to. I've been thinking I need to add something there and now I'm definitely gonna do that when I revamp her. The other thing I really like is her skin tone. It looks darker which fits because Maristela is a spanish name. I can't really play with her skin ton on the MOC because Lego didn't make those earlier bionicle masks in other skin tone colors except maybe brown, which can be used for a dark skinned character, something I plan on doing at some point. So I'm stuck with tan. But here she looks appropriately colored. You nailed the curly fluffy hair to. Its like you saw everything I was trying to emulate in the MOC and drew it correctly! Thank you so much for this! It's such a wonderful birthday gift. I love it!

Thanks for the detailed comment! I'm glad you like it! This was meant to be a portrait so I focused mainly on her face and hair, and that influenced my decision to make some changes to her outfit. I see it as an alternative costume; maybe more minimal or "light" like for a formal event during summertime. As for the skin, that was actually the hardest part for me to color because of how it contrasted with the overall color scheme I chose. In the end I blended it with a more purplish hue to fit with the other blues and purples better.

It was a good challenge and I'm satisfied with the result, so it means a lot to me that you thought it captures what you were trying to convey in the MOC.

Well truth be told I'm no fashion expert. So I didn't even really think about how a dress could have the shoulders exposed like that, but I have seen those kinds of dresses. Looking into it I don't think I'll be able to change the MOC that much. I'd have to really change the shaping and the problem is the roof element dictates a lot on this MOC. But yeah it is a nice change and I do like your outfit better. And I'm not so rigid in my ideas of my characters that I don't allow outside influences. Hell you've seen how much Matteo has been shaped and molded through other people's ideas or interpretations of him. So its fun to collaborate like that with other artists who can and do have different interpretations.

That makes sense, and it also fits the fact that her staff and overall aura glows. That's what it looked like to me at least. It worked out. You have a really good sense of color in your recent artworks. I was noticing that as I was on your page and seeing a bunch of artwork I had never seen from you before. Accidentally had deviations turned off for you. WOOPS Fixed it though. Now I'm just kinda sad at how much art from you I may have missed out on. Guess I need to go through and view it. I'll try not to spam you with comments.

Yeah you did a great job.

One of the fun things about Lego is working within the limitations of the parts, so even if you have less freedom, that actually gives you a lot of ability to work with things in unexpected ways (like the roof parts making up her sleeves and skirt). And yes, the effect I was trying to achieve was that somehow her eyes, hair, and staff are all glowing with the same kind of magic.

Feel free to spam me with comments; I like getting feedback on my art, even the old stuff. ^__^

Plague-Doc-Matteo In reply to WhisperanzaRose [2017-10-18 16:24:26 +0000 UTC]

Yeah exactly. That's why I love MOCing and that's why anymore i"m a snow white purist. Unless lego says to cut or modify it in some way(usually flex or corrugated tubes) I don't mess with it. The only grey area I play with would be painted masks, and even then I haven't really done it.

That makes sense. In my head I imagined that her staff is more a conduit for her to channel her energy so it would go from looking like a crystal to having that same transparent starry look when she actually powered it up.

I wanna do a series of MOCs based on using the translucent colors in the color palette of Lego. But that also means I need to create a bunch more characters. And inversely I feel like there's gotta be some villains to this world to. Maybe you could help me with that. You're a great wall bounce ideas off of.

I did. Now I understand how you did the hair so well. You've been practicing.

I think it would be cool to see more MOCs based on the translucent/transparent pieces. I am willing to help if you find yourself stuck on character inspiration, and you could also re-imagine old characters/concepts to fit the series.

I wish your internet activity wasn't so sporadic, I'd love to sit down with you and hash out some ideas. But I feel like it'd end up the way it always does, an unfinished email never replied to.

I still need to send you an update email huh. I should get on that.

Hm, if there was something in a previous email that that you want me to address, send it again. I usually stop replying to emails when I feel the conversation has ended or I don't know what to say.
