Description I stopped dead in my track when I saw this today. Stared at it for a minute before wading through a small, snowy meadow to photograph it.

I think this is one of my favourite pictures ever.

Shot with EOS-1D and EF 135mm f/2L USM.

Wow... That contrast is straight on, impressive! Must've taken quite some tries getting the exposure right on this one?

The photo is composed nicely - sort of splitting the photo into four. I guess you tried it, but editing out the lines from the hill could perhaps make this photo look even more flawless - of course a higher resolution could also what'd satisfy me

Lovely use of empty space!

The 1-series Canon is a splendid machine. It meters quite well. Aim at the snow, fiddle with the exposure compensation and badabing!

I think the lines of the hill is what makes the image balanced.

Excellent example of minimalism. It's so... stark white! I might've chosen a black border on this, but we're talking about the art here, which is what I like.

Westerberg In reply to martsen79 [2006-01-22 03:18:00 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for commenting. I went with a white border for that extra soft look. A black border makes the curve a bit more pronounced, in a good way, but I think it looks better with a white border.

That's beautiful

The composition is perfect to my eye. As for the light and contrast, I love the smooth and subtle edge of white against white. This has to be one of the best photos I've yet seen here on DA, or anywhere for that matter.

What an outstanding piece of imagery.
the contour of the hillside is so subtle and well done.

I really can't get over the superb stillness and purity of
this shot. Unreal.

this is sooo beautiful. so contrasted, could be ink. very great, you are so lucky. Was the sky really so white?. because it doesnt look like it's snowing. anyways, splendid photo.

There's no sky in this photograph. There's snow in the background. That "tree" is like a foot high.

But have you tried making it b&w? just a little monochrome channel mixer change in photoshop or so? BEt it would look good in b&w as well

If kil1k or ssilence would have made this, it would have have over 1000 favs already, not 3.
So here's my contribution to it:
I also hope you'll make a print from this.

Westerberg In reply to DimensionSeven [2006-01-11 20:44:45 +0000 UTC]

Thanks. I'm looking into the possibilities of making a limited-edition print of this. Just need to find some rich people wanting that on their walls.

DimensionSeven In reply to Westerberg [2006-01-11 21:03:01 +0000 UTC]

Well, I suggest u to wait a bit now. You recently got a DD. After your pic reaches 1000 views (not the fullviews but the zoomed out ones) you'll get a deal from the system: they offer you a Print Account for 15 dollars instead of 25. But it lasts for ten days or so iirc. I got my print account after that offer. Although I bought it for 25 bucks because I couldn't pay it myself (my Visa Electron isn't accepted on the net) and the offer is only valid if you buy the account for yourself, if someone buys it for you as a gift they have to pay the original 25 bugs.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Westerberg In reply to DimensionSeven [2006-01-11 21:12:22 +0000 UTC]

Thanks, I got an offer like that when my other picture passed 1000 view. But I won't be getting a prints account here. If I'm doing prints, they're gonna be big and they're gonna be done at Sweden's leading professional photo lab.

That's how obsessive about image quality I am.

DimensionSeven In reply to Westerberg [2006-01-11 21:20:36 +0000 UTC]

Ah, maximalism... *sigh* I know that.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Westerberg In reply to DimensionSeven [2006-01-11 21:36:44 +0000 UTC]

As it is now, I need to have absolute control over every step in the process of creating a print. The 1D only outputs 4.15MPix. It's a very tight margin. I might buy a 1Ds later, but I'm seriously low on cash at the moment. You can only starve so much.

Photography is the only place where I don't have to compromise. At least not all that much. Technically, anyway. I suck at compromising.

amazing. Maybe it's just my monitor, but if only it had a liiiiiitle more contrast between the sky and landscape...

The Hill is visable enough, I don't think you would want to change that. I love the idea, of the tree surviving in bleak, lonely conditions and the sharpness of the tree in the white is wonderful! Weldone on the image, I can see why it would be one of your favorites
