Sonic team has sort of a tradition, every new game that comes out introduces at least one new character. It stared when Tails joined in Sonic 2, Amy and Metal Sonic in Sonic CD, Knuckles in Sonic 3, and so forth with few exceptions. Since the Sonic Adventure days there have been more characters introduced than ever (These are the "new" characters that are eligible for this award.) Some of them are iconic to the series now, such as Shadow; others, like Big, are reviled, but I give the award for best newer Sonic Character ever to Blaze the cat, for being the only one with the guts to tell Marine that she was an annoying background character who had nothing to do with the gameplay and she should stop feeling so self-important. er...not in as many words of course.Congratulations Blaze, please burn to a crisp anyone who tries to shout the merits of some other secondary character in the comments.

I'm not necessarily saying she's unlikable, just that she's annoying, it's satisfying to see a character like that get told off by another character in the canon

I played both of those, and I had no such problems. why? BECAUSE I KNEW HOW TO PLAY THE GAME! If You're under the water long enough to be in danger of dying, then you're doing it wrong! Tails isn't a bad character- if you say blame deaths in the Genesis games on him, then that means you're a bad player!

I haven't played either of those games for ages and sucked due to shitty hand-eye coordination and I can firmly place the blame on my shitty dad and his even shittier genes. I don't blame Tails and loathe him for other reasons than him being a pain in the ass in the nineties

*Claps* I agree. Blaze is truly one of the best Sonic characters sega has ever produced but its truly sad that they have no idea what the hell they're doing along with the Sonic Team as a whole. Seriously its truly pathetic how they run the Sonic Series in general for videogames.

A Sue is a character who has no right being part of a story, yet by the writer's declaration they are made the most important character and everybody loves them, Cream the Rabbit, a 6 year old girl with a chao, was introduced to the story for no other purpose than to put a little girl in the story, yet she is one of the most powerful characters in the series (able to take out the final boss in SA2 without even moving.) Blaze may be powerful, but she has very real character flaws and personality issues that make her a compelling character. Her power made it difficult to open up to others, leaving her isolated. She tried to do everything herself and was nearly killed because of it, she didn't instantly become one of Sonic's friends who tags along for the sake of it like Cream but actually had a developed story about how she came to befriend the other characters.
I also know the male equivalent of a Mary Sue, Gary Stu, which is what Chris Thorndyke is.
