I like villains that actually accept death if it's coming right for them, and there's nothing they can do to stop it. Ducard from Batman Begins is a perfect example of this.

I prefer the villain to actually have reason for his actions, like Doctor Doom, having reason to take over the world is because he believes that he can make it a better place and fix all social awareness problems. Amon from Korra has a valid reason too. His reason is that there is extreme racism towards non benders in Republic City. So by removing bending from the world, everyone would be "equal". Magneto has a similar black panther-ish cause for his actions to Amon. Magneto believes that the humans are going to create a holocaust of mutants because he was sent to a concentration camp as a child, so he feared that mutants could be killed, baked, gased, and starved the same way as the Jews. So he then decided to attempt to wipe out humanity and let the mutants be the dominant race. All these that I mentioned are prime examples of villains who actually have reasons to take over the world based on political ideology rather than looks or sad past, which I love.

Well, evil tends to bring out more bombastic characters. Take The Joker, for example. Villians just tend to be more fun to watch than heroes. But I agree with your point about evil =/= instant badass.
Also, Dark Pit can't really be called evil, anyway.
