A Critique by I. M. Snootyartist:
I must say that this is a magnificent piece. The placement of the subject on paper gives it a very rectangular quality that you do not often see when working without paper. I must also commend you on your decision to use pencil. The way you used the dark end of this device to actually create the image is near genius. I was moved by this work the moment I saw it. And when I read the title, "Josh", a tear rolled down my cheek. Josh, indeed. Doesn't that say it all? You will live forever along side the other great masters such as Leonard di Vini Vedi Vici, and Mike Angelo. You simply blow away artists like Jackson Polyp and Freeda Cola. I hope to see more of your work soon.
This Critique is brought to you by I. M. Snootyartist. Thank you for your time.

The first thing I noticed about this drawing is portrait is how light the values are. I think the baby would "pop" out more if the background was black instead of white.
As far as the accuracy of the portrait, it is hard for me to say without a photo reference to go by. The pencil rendering is very well done. The hair, and the skin tones look quite real, though I do wonder if the skin tones could have a little more contrast in them with darker shadow areas. The lightness of the skin does add to the look of innocence however. The eyes have a blank expression in them...kinda zoned out, in another world look. I wonder what was on this babies mind.
The placement of the eyes, and nose look right on and in proportion to eachother for this age. The mouth seems a little low though. There appears to be a little too much space between the nose and the mouth, just a tad though. And are the lips really that dark? As dark as the eyes and hair? And the ears usually start at the eyes, and end at the bottom of the nose. Your ears start where they usually do but come down lower than the bottom of the nose. It looks a little like the baby has kinda big ears.
Again, this portrait is beautifully rendered. You work very nicely in the pencil medium. Portraiture is considered by many people to be one of the harder subjects to attempt, and I do feel you've captured the innocence, and I'm certain even the emotion of this baby at this particular moment. I especially like the detail of the ear and the light indication of eyebrows. I do question some of your placements of the features on this piece as I mentioned above, and possibly the lights/shadows of the skin and mouth.
I really can't be 100% certain of some of the statements I made above, however I do suggest, that you look for the things I mentioned comparing your portrait to the photograph. (Did you use a photograph?) See if you notice these things as well.

In addition to the above critique, using darker pencils to increase contrast so everything isn't so light may be considered.

"Come on, baby, smile! Smile for the camera!"
Unprofessional though it was, Mr. Smethwyck tried to snap photos of his son, Josh, in the bath. His wife looked annoyed, but smiled anyway, her vexation relieved by her sweet baby boy.
"Smile, smile, come on Josh!"
Mrs. Smethwyck sighed softly. "Just take a picture, John. He's sweet enough as it is."

Very cute! It looks so realistic, like I could just reach out and touch him. The only thing that I can pick out about this picture is the eyes. The one's kind of squinty and the other's not, but maybe that's just the way the picture was. At any rate, it looks good. The blending is very smooth, which gives the picture a nice soft look, very good for a picture of a baby. Keep up the good work!
