Sonic himself and it's a tie me thinks between Sonic Generations HD and Sonic Unleashed HD. SG is a consistent and more roundedly better experience but Unleashed pwns it in terms of world building and characterizationand it's day stages and night stages are still highly entertaining.

Regarding why I like Sonic? Well TBH, I never invested a lot of attention in Sonic before SatSR was released. He didn't interest me much and whilst I certainly didn't hate him, I didn't absolutely love him either. When SatSR was released and I saw cutscenes depicting Sonic as an intensely compassionate, selfless and realistic and extremely interesting character, it was like a revelation to me. Sonic knocked Knuckles off the favourite character spot pretty much in one fell swoop.

After that game, I looked back at Sonic in previous games and it was like a revelation to me. He suddenly become so endearing that to this day I wonder why I didn't fall in love with his characterization and appearance earlier. He's such a fascinating character with endearing little mannerisms like obsession with maintaining a spik-and-spam appearance, love of Chili Dogs and presumed aquaphobia amongst many others.

There's also his bromance with Tails that makes me fall head over heels every single time both for it and for Sonic. It's one of the most endearing aspects of Sonic and the series in general to me.
