Description Since, struggling through hard and busy autumn, I haven't done anything new since September, let me present a retrospective piece this time. These are excerpts from my scrapbook called The Silver Book. It's a kind of an artistic notebook that consists of not only minimalistic improvisational collages and drawings but also (or mainly) of notes, reflections, fragments of my personal mythology, memories, thoughts, and impressions written down in the shape of figurative phrases. For me it's a chronicle of creative moments, a source of meaning associations and re-inspirations; finally, it's a compendium of knowledge - the anthology of personal experiences turned into image and words, which helps me to fill in the intuitive spaces in creation with meaning grounded on genuine personal experiences. It's a nice process.

As this 500-pages volume is not an art project, The Silver Book is constantly undergoing a slow progress. What can you see now is only a small part of what I hope it will become in the future.

Now there's a full feature on my blog , IX 2012.

This is amazing, I absolutely love the concept. This makes me think of Duchamp are you inspired by his work?

Nice to hear it. As far as it concerns the play with the linguistic component, collage and art objects, transpositions and juxtapositions - as features of Dada - then indeed, it may bring Duchamp's art to mind. So perhaps, more than direct inspiration it's been the matter of some shared interests. :>

I assume then, your work is influenced by the Dada movement and as its founder I guess Duchamp was bound to spring to mind. However, it wasn't the components that you mention, i really meant the concept of keeping a book/journal as a work in itself similar to, I think, Duchamp's Red Box. I love the way you have interpreted this concept and the way you have implemented it. I'm inspired to have a closer look at the Dada movement. I am more interested in the work produced from this movement rather than its objectives. Thank you for replying, you are very articulate.

Thanks for mentioning The Red Box, as I wasn't familiar with it, always associating Duchamp mostly with a focus on objects, but - considering the dadaistic insterests - no wonder that among these objects there was a book too. I also have to learn more about it then!

So now I wonder from where I first got the idea of an artist journal... My first book work had been The Book of Autumn from 2004, completed a few years before I began The Silver Book - and it was done more in the vein of little, handmade poetry volumes. It's funny that in those days I didn't even know how to call this kind of creations, and as far as I remember, the main inspiration might have come from the art of Brody Neuenschwander, especially from the work he did for Enya's A Box of Dreams, but I can mention also Blake's The Marriage of Heaven and Hell. These times were the artistic beginnings for me, so it's easier for me to precisely discern the sources of inspiration as there weren't as many of them as there is now. Later, these sources of possible influences started to abound - from art (including the Dada movement, mediaeval manuscripts, modern book-art etc.) through literature to contemporary book design, and maybe that's why it's more difficult for me to name the exact works or names, because since some time it's been more like a confrontation of what I have been already pursuing on my own with what had been done there in history (and what is being done there now) - and this confrontation has been quite selective a process.

Thus now I wonder on the second question - do I now tend to get inspired by theories and concepts more than by particular works or aesthetics? I'll have to think about it. It's a complex and elusive subject - but such ones are always the best. ;> Thank you Larain for your thought-provoking comments, and I'm happy you like The Silver Book!

A raczej jej fragment.
Ale on przestał tworzyć.

Waaaah, I simply adore this.
It's really elegant and intimate. I wish my notebooks could be of this quality , they are actually really messy and my sketches and writtings there are poorly done just to kill time
I really love this, mate

Haha, bear in mind that these are only good-looking fragments; even in The Silver Book there is mess in between the pages. My notes are mostly scattered on single accidental sheets of paper, and only when I begin to lose control over what and where they are, I rewrite them into the book. And some of what you can see above is simply the effect of doodling with paint and paper scraps. But I have to admit that this book is also a part (or an effect) of my desire to mythologize reality; to some extent it's like self-indulging in feeling of making something legendary for myself. Thank you very much for your comment! Happy Holidays!

Thank you very much for your kind words and wishes, Jorge! These works would be just a whim of eccentric mind if there weren't such insightful and intelligent observers, or maybe I should say - participants. May all Good Wishes spoken and heard this Winter turn into Prophecies, and the Light make a move Towards You!

I would love to know how would you sell one of these... how much, I mean.
I'll get one someday, I promise.

Versatis In reply to mysticnova7 [2009-12-22 12:56:44 +0000 UTC]

I don't think I'll ever sell The Silver Book - it's too precious for me personally. But I'm sure I'll do some more altered books that would be more of an artistic project - then yes. But as of yet, I have no idea how much would they be (and when I get down to work on them). Instead, I can think of something smaller in the same style, which will be more accessible and affordable, so... there's a chance by all means. Thank you, Andrés!
