Well first of all, I think that there's no short cuts. It's all about practicing and finding own favorite techniques.
There is some quite useful tutorials around the internet which helps you to get started.

It's amazing. I'm sorry for I can't you a constructive comment, as the skills used to make this piece of art are remotely better than mine. Although, I could advice you to reduce the luminosity of the background, which seems to green for me (but maybe was it done on purpose?).

Sometimes I try to follow the realism of the universe, but sometimes I like to go a bit further and for example add some colors which doesn't exist in the space.
As seen on the Hubble telescope pics for ex. the space is quite pitch black place. Thank you for your feedback and I'm glad that you like the work!
