Description Commissioned portrait of the lovely Archie.

Prismacolour pencils on pastel paper, I'm quite pleased with the effect.

Spectacular!! Do you have a problem with your prismas' wood breaking or splintering?

Thanks so much! I do occasionally yes, I often find that's when my pencil sharpener has gotten blunt. A brand new cheapo plastic one often does the trick, though now and again even that doesn't work - some of them are just buggered

My pleasure! Yeah I've had some problems with them so I've been using Derwent's lately...

Gorgeous!!! The paper was colored to begin with, right? How did you get such VIVID white? I've never managed to get my white Prismacolors to go that bright.

Colored paper is exactly the solution I could use for hiding all the white space in my pet portraits such as: [link] and: [link]

Thanks so much!

I'm trying to remember about this one.. usually, my method for getting any really bright white that I need is to use a little white oil paint over the top. Unlike acrylic which seems to flake off the shiny surface, oil paint sticks and blends well as a final layer of brightness touch up.

I'm not actually sure if I did that on this piece, as I think it was before I figured it out (in which case it's just very heavily layered white), but it's a good method if you're having problems getting the white

Good luck with your stuff, it's looking great

Oil paint, hm? I had learned to use a tiny bit of white ink for whiskers and highlights in the eyes but I never thought of paint. Does the oil hold color at all after it's been painted or do you have to make sure it's perfect the first time?

Thanks for the compliment (my work isn't nearly as good as yours though!)

Hmm, you know I'd never thought of white ink.. I might have to get some to try it..

I'm not quite sure what you mean by 'hold colour'? It's good to get it right the first time, but if you've really worked the pencil in, and you're painting on to the shiny surface doing that creates, you can sort of scratch it off if you really mess up. I think colouring over it usually works too, either by colouring over or the action of colouring just brings the paint right off

Oh, sorry I meant to ask if the colored pencil rubbed off the paint (like Sharpie rubs off on certain plastics) or if it stayed on as color-fast as it does on paper.

That shiny surface is 'wax bloom' and it's caused by the wax they add to the lead to make the color go down smooth. To deal with it, you can usually wipe some of it away with a finger or a cotton cloth or you can spray workable fixative regularly while you're coloring. Here's a thread on that: [link]

How do you get that lovely fur texture on his cheek? I totally struggle to get it looking like fine hairs and not flat or patchy.

I don't know exactly! Mostly I think it's a lot of layering

whoa! that is beautiful! what color of brown did you use with the prismacolor? i was on the site today buying some and there was only like.. Dark Brown, chocolate, sandbar brown

but seriously, this is beyond believable! I love it!

Thank you very much Just been nosing through my colours again trying to work it out, as far as I can remember/figure out, it was mostly Burnt Ochre, Dark Umber, Black, probably some Dark Brown, a little Goldenrod and a surprising amount of Blush Pink for the highlights. They're beautiful pencils, you can get some lovely effects blending them all together
