Description No, no, no!
Stick to the stuff you know
If you wanna be cool,
Follow one simple rule
Don't mess with the flow
No no
Stick to the status quo

No, no, no!
Stick to the stuff you know
It is better by far,
To keep things as they are
Don't mess with the flow
No no
Stick to the status quo!

I finally finished my big art project!

The ultimate message we're meant to take away from the first High School Musical movie is; "It doesn't matter what clique you belong to, you define yourself however you choose."

It's a really good message, if you ignore the hypocrisy the series presents in showing everyone else breaking down social and societal barriers to be who they want to be, while the obviously gay kid is forced to stay quiet about who he truly is. And don't even get me started on the way Troy's character arc is handled!

So, this is my tribute to the fun little pro-conformist number, depicting the characters who ultimately did, "break free" of the definitions foisted upon them over the course of the series. Or, in the case of Ryan and Troy, some of those definitions:

Martha Cox: The brainiac who confessed that, "hip-hop was her passion", proceeded to, "pop and lock and jam and break", and then went on to become a cheerleader.

Zeke Baylor: The athlete who admits to his secret love of baking, and, in Troy's words, "can cook up a mean creme brulee". He is later seen dating Sharpay Evans, the queen of the school's theater.

Nameless Skater Dude: The skater who confides in his fellow skater dudes and dudettes about his, "need that he cannot deny". He reveals that he plays the cello, and then drops off the face of the earth. (Seriously. What happened to this kid? What happened to the skaters, period? )

Ryan Evans: The lovable theater king who, most likely inspired by Troy Bolton, the boy that he has a not so subtle crush on, later broke free of his sister, and befriended all of the key members of Troy's posse, before ultimately befriending Troy, himself.

Troy Bolton: The basketball player and golden boy, who is really a theater kid in jock's clothing. Troy sparked the "revolution", by auditioning for the school musical.

I would have included Kelsi, another character that sort of shatters the stereotype surrounding her, but I ran out of room.

Oh, and Chad's there, too, but he's a static character with no real arc, and he doesn't "break free", of any stereotypes or forced definitions, because he has no reason to.

As a side note, my coloring is quite atrocious on Ryan's poor face, once again.

Group pictures are horrible to do, but you pulled this one off flawlessly! I particularly love how Martha came out, you captured her perfectly (well you captured everyone perfectly). And stop, your coloring is wonderful! Especially the shading! Also I think Ryan's profile view is one of your bests! And Troy's expression is adorable! Amazing work as always!

You've got that right. There were a few instances during the sketching phase where I thought that I would never finish this.

Really? Thank you so much!

You're too kind. Really. My coloring looks simply atrocious on poor Ryan's face. It honestly is difficult for me to look at this picture, because I think my coloring on it is so awful.

Bu-ut, thank you so very much for all of your kind words. I appreciate all of the comments that you've ever posted on my art, and always look forward to receiving more of them.

Wow, so much going on... They look SO good! So much like themselves, it's so realistic. IDK how you do it with traditional art, but OMG you make it look amazing.

Yes. The actual scene in the movie that inspired this picture is even more chaotic! Thank you so much! That's a huge compliment!

My hands are kind of unsteady, and I'm really a complete novice when it comes to digital drawing, so I sort of have no choice but to push myself to continue to improve at traditional art.

But you do traditional art amazingly well... And my hands shake really bad too. That's why I can't do smooth lines and stuff. I try to compensate for it with style, as much as possible. I still feel like it's painfully obvious, but well... I can't do traditional because my supplies and drawings always get ruined, and other reasons. Anyway your work is just amazing and you keep getting better all the time.

Aww, thank you! You really are too generous with your words.

Really? I never noticed. You do such a great job with stylistic lines! Aww, I'm sorry to hear that. But, you're a talented digital artist, so don't worry about your inability to do traditional art. Stick with the medium that's the most comfortable for you.

And, thank you again. I really, truly appreciate that.

Awww, that's so sweet. Seriously. I've been trying to really work on improving lines and backgrounds. But there are lots of things I need to improve on. I used to just do sketchy lines but lately I've tried to move on to more smooth lineart. It's always really hard but with digital art, zooming in close can help a lot. It becomes a pain if you have to do it too much though.

I'm just naturally really fidgety and I always have to have my hands busy. Like... I can't really just sit and watch TV. When it comes to video games, fine. But I can't just sit and do nothing like some people can. Nothing at all wrong with it, but I just can't do it. If so, I get really fidgety and if I can't fidget I can't concentrate and also my hands shake.

And no prob. Same to you. I love traditional art and digital pretty much equally. I think both are great, it just depends on what the person likes or feel they can do best.

in my opinion: you make one of the hardest stuff in art: you draw people tradiotionally, in realistic style. And you make it pretty good.
So epic clap for your art
