Here's my full costume for Otakon 2008, taken by me shortly before going to the con (so nothing has broken at this point!)Because I was asked a lot, as with almost all of my costumes, this costume was entirely home-made. (Nothing purchased and used as-is, nothing commissioned.) The head has a paper mache base with a Model Magic beak, and the hammer is made out of insulation foamboard and pvc pipe. I'm wearing a foam suit made out of a mattress pad underneath the kimono which keeps me looking round. I can kind of see out of the eyes with the head on (one-way fabric), although it's very hard to hear, and of course, the costume gets very toasty inside.
Unfortunately, the picture came out dark, but I did my best to lighten it up in photoshop. That's the only aspect that's been edited.

Hey, I'm glad to see some examples of how someone else did this. I've been dying to do a Dedede cosplay for years. I have a question about how you managed to maintain the girth of the costume: Do you think I could achieve a similar effect using hula hoops? I'm kind of a small girl (tall, but small(ish) yet another reason why I think this costume would be hilarious) so I need to figure out how to keep Dedede looking as big as possible while maintaining structural integrity.

Hmm... I've never personally worked with hula hoops, but I've seen other people use them for costumes. They would probably work just fine for keeping the circle shape, but since they're a bit thick, you'll probably want a thick material overtop anyway to keep them from showing through like ribs. Also, in order to keep the shape more spherical than coneish, you'll either want to support the hoop with some other solid frame (like chickenwire/thick foam) or find a lot of hoops in different sizes.
When working with solid hoops/frames, don't forget to consider your own comfort. Part of the reason I went with a mattress pad was that I wanted to be able to sit down when I needed to, so I picked something flexible over a rigid base. I guess the foam wasn't as round as hoops or a cage would have been, but considering that I'm not a big girl either, it seems to have done the job well enough. ^^ Good luck!

It actually wasn't too bad. Since it's mostly made of foam, it only weighs about 20 pounds tops. Of course, it is big, so even though I had no trouble lifting it, the hard part was making sure I didn't accidentally hit innocent bystanders with it.

Man, the mask head looks so accurate, it's hard to beileve this is all homemade. Great job! First time I ever saw anyone cosplay as Dedede, or any Kirby character really.
I especially love how huge the mallet is.
