The realization hit me like a slap in the face at that moment as I watched the moonlight travel slantwise through her eyes, illuminating the aqua-blue in perfect, luminous clarity. I had gone and fallen in love with Kohrumei - and it was a different sort of love than any I had ever felt before. It was nothing like the affection I'd felt for my mother or the lustful obsession I'd felt for Iri. It twisted and ached inside me like hunger, while at the same time making me feel giddy and light as air. It was vexing and painful and beautiful at once, and I never wanted the feeling to stop. But at the same time as I rejoiced to know that I was feeling love at last - real love - I felt despair clawing at my heart, for I knew it was profoundly wrong for me to love her. Like every other pleasure I had known in my life, my love for her was rooted in sin. To love her, I thought, must be the greatest sin of all - an aberration of nature, for something so impure to love something so innocent. Surely my love could do nothing but destroy her, as I had destroyed everything else I had ever loved.
