Description My all-time favorite book is Windmaster's Bane by Tom Deitz. In the novel, the main character had what he called a "Runestaff", with the following inscription;

Whoever holds to hinder here
From road that’s right, from quest that’s clear
Think not to trick with tongue untrue
Nor veil the vision, nor the view
Look not to lose, nor lead astray
Who wields this warden of the way

This was the first craft/art item I ever tried to make. I was 15 at the time, and used what materials I could get my hands on. The staff itself was a clothes pole, with a cotton cord for the grip, bits of aluminum pipe for the endcaps, and the inscription was translated to Tolkien's Elvish, and then carved with a drimmel tool.
