Description

Dobryi vechir! Jak spravy? (Good evening! How are you?) Quite a hectic year this one has been, especially for both Eastern and Western society. I unfortunately haven't been keeping track of the news as much lately due to starting a new job this year but let me break down the stuff I do remember.

So as for 2019, you got an impeachment happening in America (okay, I guess). Brexit SEEMS to be finally happening at the start of next year (all thanks for the British version of Trump after kicking out Theresa May who failed spectacularly). Also America's pulling out of the Middle East so now Turkey's trying to purge the Kurds out of Syria (reap what you sow). I remember the Amazon on fire being on the news a few months ago (although apparently it burns every year). There was some shocking documentary interviews that came out, including Michael Jackson's "Leaving Neverland" and English Prince Andrew about Epstein (which also failed spectacularly). You got the Chinese tech company Huawei being accused of espionage by the Americans. Pope Francis made waves in Vatican law and visits. In February, NASA said that apparently thanks to China and India, Earth is now greener since 2000? At the same time, the Mars Opportunity rover mission is over and Einstein was right again when they not only successfully observed the motion of stars around our Milky Way's supermassive black hole but also finally got a picture of one from Messier 87. In other areas, we got a new Japanese Emperor taking the throne. Wikileaks Founder, Julian Assange finally got booted out of the Ecuadorian embassy and into police custody. Elon Musk's SpaceX program is going well, but his Starlink system is causing grief for astronomers and stargazers. There's climate activist Greta Thunberg speech at that G20 summit (unfortunately, I don't think people got the message behind it, just the meme). And finally, China celebrated its founding anniversary with its grandest military parade yet, all the while Hong Kong is burning due to idiotic rioters and a disgrace of a administration not doing much to stop this farce at all. In conclusion, we're surviving and I have no idea what's going on upstairs.

In the entertainment industry, a colourful selection of new releases including Star Wars, The Mandalorian, HBO Chernobyl, Joker, 1917, Frozen 2, Toy Story 4, The Lion King, Rambo, IT chapter 2 and John Wick 3.

Anime also got its fair share with The Rising of the Shield Hero, Fate Heaven's Feel, Konosuba S2, Boruto, Kimetsu no Yaiba, The Promised Neverland, One Punch Man S2, Attack on Titan S3 and many others.

For games, we got Kojima's Death Stranding , Resident Evil 2, Pokemon Sword and Shield, Untitled Goose Game, Kingdom Hearts 3, Hunt Showdown, COD Modern Warfare, Red Dead Redemption 2 and more.

As for me, well its been a combination of both hectic and monotonous for this year. Finally achieved my 2nd Degree in karate and got a uniform upgrade, neat! I was also lucky enough to get a job as a draftsman at this nice company. May not be a dream job as they make it out to be in university, but I like it so far since the work is mostly drawing and designing so win-win. Unfortunately, that meant I'm now busy all the time with work and teaching karate classes which further killed my energy in drawing and writing fanfics. Between catching up with all the subs everyone been posting and doing some late Spring cleaning, I should get something ready before this New Year holiday ends. Even then, I'm not sure how busy I'm going to be in the coming months. FYI for those not up in international news, Australia's been scorching this 2019 and because of that, we've got ourselves one of the biggest bushfires even since the Black Christmas of 2001.

For an idea on how severe it is, here's some pictures from the national fire map around Sydney:

sta.sh/0fw46ewxayc

It may not look like much but that's 5 million hectares of land currently on fire. Been burning since the start of December and will burn for another month or two. This is what we get when we live on a desert island filled up with combustible trees. And all this stretches from Canberra all the way up to Brisbane, i.e. the entire east coast of NSW, so pray to all the brave volunteers that the wind doesn't change directions because if that fire starts creeping any further east, we got nowhere to run. We already exhausted our supply of fire retardants (the red stuff they drop out of planes) so we had to start calling on help from the Americans and Canadians as the fire front is now so close to the city that work had to called off a few times earlier this month because the air quality was so low that it was raining ash. Literally looked like the napalm scene from Apocalypse Now, complete with yellow smoke so thick you couldn't see across the street. Thankfully, the Christmas reprieve came around so everyone's now making the most of the situation. Everything west is beyond saving, but hopefully with all the back-burning, the fire will eventually choke itself out.

Oh, and a word of advice to you all and myself; because of the particular lettering for the year 2020, it's been advised by banks and lawyers that for any cheques or contracts you sign next year, write down the full year in the date section, i.e. "2020", not just "20" otherwise some people can exploit a legal loophole in how dates are written in different countries/systems and invalidate your piece of paper because your signature is "out of date." Just a heads up.

Well enough about the world. So for 2019, this RD fanclub has seen a rise of 20 new members, 18 submissions and 1 affiliation. Tammy's been making good work with Bottled Up. Thanks for all the art you and everyone else has been posting. Got a lot to catch up on so I'll tell you more the next time around. In the meantime, here's our pokemons trying to set up for New Years celebration, looks like my dewott wanted to show us how everything's going so far. Eh, I'll leave them to it.

Happy 2020 everyone!

Things are a mixed bag here and there but yeah, to a progressive year I'd say.

Thanks for the congrat. Best of luck to yours as well. Must be a multi-stage event to have something last 12 hours, kinda reminds me of how the SAS or Spetsnaz once talked about their selection exams.

Wow, I can see you being a head taller those at the front. You probably got a reach advantage compared to everyone else eh?

I saw your website and it seems like quite a close knit and diverse group. Good mix of physical and skill based classes. Do you always train like that or do they mix it up on occasion. My instructor usually focuses on the basics all the time while for us older guys, we do strength or endurance training in every 8 week period. Advance training usually happens a few times a month where we do a bit of passive-fighting and weapons defence. My group is called the Personal Defence Studios and this is one of our websites: www.thepitmartialarts.com.au/

We also have an America branch but I couldn't find anything on that in the web.

6 hours for a blue belt is quite extreme if you ask me. But I'm probably bias in my understanding because our exams are a mix of technical and physical testing in a much shorter time frame. We usually just focus on the former for the younger or lower ranks but once you go above blue belt, it's mostly mental strength testing as my master instructor would push the applicants till they're exhausted in less than 30 minutes and continue on just to see whether they'll recover from it or break down. It's quite brutal to watch, especially during full contact sparring and they try to hold back what little energy they have left.

My classes is similar but with more focus on unarmed fighting and defence against street fighting/domestic violence situations. When you get to green belt you start working more on stick and knife defence as well as more intense contact sparring. Beyond brown belt, you'll add very physical stuff like 2 to 1 sparring and endurance fighting. Gun defence doesn't get a lot of focus for us since in Australia you're more likely to get stabbed or ganged up in a barfight than have someone come up to you with a gun. Instead, we black belts get to do stuff like kali knife fighting and submission techniques, really good at keeping you on your feet.

I suppose 4 hours would be more than enough time to go through everything a practitioner would've learnt. Our exams our more segmented and sticks to the learning curriculum of the grade you're on. Because of that, each colour belt does their exam for an hour or so, but it can be absolutely back-breaking if you're not fit enough for it. Pity that you have to go to Israel to go further than brown. Krav Maga is a good realistic martial art to learn if you're serious on getting the most out of it.

Our club practices a lot of arts besides karate. Japanese weaponry is another popular choice for us as well as boxing. The art that I do is called Kwon Bop Do which is a Korean MMA that combined all of them together.

It's always good to remember the basics. Helps make the more advance stuff simpler to pull off successfully.

I've always wanted to try fighting with a karambit, unfortunately in Australia it's illegal to own a fighting knife for anything other than as a house decor so getting a real one is a nightmare.

Maybe when you're nearly a black belt, you can ask your instructors to arrange a training trip to Israel every few years or so. My club organises a trip to Japan or Korea every few years for the senior and master black belts.

Yeah, you'd most likely heard of our art or its MMA style because KBD actually originated in America. Our founding grandmaster is Joe Onopa, descendant of the Geronimo. He worked as a bodyguard for his mentor who's also a South Korean general for a time so he picked up a number of arts both traditional and freestyle before combining them into what we practice now.

Thats for a fun pic (although Trey aint the type to steal cookies he would love to share em XD)

Idiotic rioters? Farce? Are you aware of what's happening in Hong Kong bro?

Guess he just wanted to start early. Boys these days do like to be mellow and the girls probably weren't.

I have relatives in HK so I know very well what's going on there. A few times already people rioted near their homes and the cops never showed up to stop them. Don't trust the news because the stuff they say isn't the full story, even my country leave a couple of details out which really disappointed me such as the 2nd police shooting which occurred because a pair of cops thought it was a good idea to break off from the main group only to find a lynch mob on top of them, and when they ran away, the mob chased after them till they were cornered in a narrow side street, hence the shooting. Hong Kong is also in recession right now and many small businesses and subsequently rental places are feeling the squeeze. Sure, when they were protesting that extradition bill in the beginning, I agree with that because that law was way too broad to be used properly. When the bill was dropped and they asked for more say in the council, I agree as well because unlike our government, they don't get a say in who runs the upper legislative. But demanding independence from China is pushing it and the moment they stopped blocking traffic and started breaking random stores and tearing up the roads because the government said no while beating up anyone who tried to dissuade them, they are no longer protestors but rioters.

What I find infuriating about this situation is how both sides is acting on this. The rioters because it doesn't take an idiot to know that Hong Kong does not have the economic or military power to survive as an independent entity without getting screwed over with the political war the East and West are currently in. And then you have the government administration who shows no sign of engaging with alternative deals with the rioters nor ordering the full force of the police to suppress them, all they're doing is sitting on their arse making press conferences while the city is literally getting torn apart for the past 7 months and the cops can't do damage control because they're being sent out in piecemeal and usually ill-equipped, hence why a lot of them can be seen carrying live weapons because they could get ganged up very quickly. And they cry police brutality? Please! They pull this stunt in Australia and the cops here wouldn't just gas you, they'll tasers and baton charge you bloody.

It’s waaaay more complicated then that dude. And after the last elections in Hong Kong and the size of the protests these past few months the people of that city have spoken. And I would hope that a member of a democratic country like me you would hope they aren’t further oppressed upon by those authoritarian pigs in Beijing

And while in a different scenario then what goes on in America, the demands from the Hongkongers are fairly simple and the investigations into police brutality should be allowed. Because while it’s absolutely possible some people may have taken advantage of the situation to act up the vast majority of the protesters have stood fast by their demands
