Description "Having desended into the atmosphere of the planet, the two explorers activated their ATTs (atmospheric thruster turbines) and jet-glided for awhile in the upper stratosphere. Below them was a great ocean. It covered the planet to the east, but to the west... There at last was the continent they came here for. Even from up here thay could make out the river; it seemed like a fantastically huge snake winding its way down the the sea. Most of the continent was covered in dense jungle, fed by the great river. The pair banked and desended further... The size of the river below became more appreciable. The dirty-brown river, ladden with sediment, mixed with the deep blue waters of the ocean. From up here, the mingling waters looked like an abstract masterpiece by the greatest artist of all... the Creator..."
"Lower and lower they swept across the surface of the alien planet. Now they were a mere fifty meters above the waters of the beach. To one side was jungle, to the other, endless sea. Then the pair glimped their first extraterrestrial wildlife. They had read all the manuels and fieldguides concerning the organisms here. But nothing could have prepared them for the first, real-time/place sonar images being processed by their ships' artificial booms. Two gawky-looking vertebrates with disproportionally large, crested cephalons strided across the shoreline. They were flyers with a single huge phalange supporting a complex membraneous wing. Suddenly, a huge beast came crashing out of the jungle adjacent to the flyers (which it obviously intended to consume). The flyers were too quick, however, an barely escaped the horizantally hindged jaws of their persuer... The explorers recognized the grounded tetrapod as a 'spla'tu' (a name which in their language means 'sail back'). Completing their tour of the coast the explorers slowed down their vehicles to a hovering 25 mph. They turned inland and went out over the jungle, ready for even stranger beings on this alien planet they called Spec.

Love the story! It'd bee cool to see a drawing of just the ships designs themselves.

I must practice more on mechanical-looking designs. (smile)

Aliens exploring Cretaceous Africa, eh? That's what I can grasp, and if there was a newly discovered Spinosaurus species, like for example since yours ain't S. AEGYPTIACUS, and since the pterosaurs may jusyt be Alanqa saharica thats what I could grasp!!

Relly ironic, the picture!!

Yes that makes perfect sense! However, I imagined this scene taking place in my parallel universe where, on parallel earth, dinosaurs never lost dominence, and these being newly evolved dinos/pteros on the coast of South America. It's a bit out-dated now since I've thought of a few more different creatures for Terra. But I suppose it could just as well be what you say. Makes sense in that if alien ecologists ever visited earth in the far past, they would do well to leave no imprints on the biosphere, therefore no evidence they were ever here...

Scary. (joke)

At first I was just reading through your description and thinking "hm, these guys must be based on quetzalcoatlus and spinosaurus or something.. that's cool C:"
And then I realized... wait those ARE dinosaurs, not based on dinosaurs, and now I'm geekin' out about how awesome this drawing is, aliens exploring planet Earth in the time of dinosaurs. Oh godddd that's just so awesome.
I would give anything to be those aliens. I love you.

Thank you! Wow, that's some of the nicest feedback I've gotten. Thanks again! I been thinking about how I could continue the series. They are either the race of Eos exploring the alternate world of Spec (where dinosaurs never died out), or they are tou-houl explorers serveying the planet in modern times.

You're very welcome C:
Hmm what a crazy world it would be if dinosaurs never went extinct! I've wanted to be a paleontologist ever since I learned how to say the word "dinosaur". I certainly like that "alternate world" idea, it would be amazing if there were a different place or time where dinosaurs still roamed.

I know! The very first creatures I ever took a genuine interest in were dinosaurs. Nowadays I am hevily interested in extraterrertrial life, but dinosaurs remain my favorite earth-creatures. Plus, the speculation on dinosaurs and extaterrestrials share many things; we don't know what there are really like, we look to living earth-creatures for ideas about them, and our generation will likly never be able to expirience them. I consider dinosaurs to be within the same branch of speculative biology as aliens as they are themselves very "alien". That's why I have incooporated the alternate world of Spec in my iUniverse for a while.

Ah that makes a lot of sense, I'll definitely agree with you C: I've always thought of dinosaurs as being quite alien, we don't have anything remotely like them anymore so it seems as if they really could have come from another planet!

You should do more dinosaurs more often!

I have acually had that on my list for some time! I really should get on to it...

if this is what I think it is meant to be, than it is simply AWESOME!!!

if I am interpertig the story correctly, the story involves Darwin IV sentients exploring the earth during prehistory, in a sort of reverese 'expedition'!?

please say yes, and then continue the series!!!

Until now I had no idea who those guys in the spaceships were, but thanks; they shall be the eos (eosapiens) exploring the planet Spec. Although they are visiting in prehistory, its acually 2million years ago.--How are there dinosaurs you ask? Because this story takes place in a universe that I made up called iUniverse. In iUniverse, the dinosaurs never lost dominence, and continue to rule the planet Spec (parallel earth) today. Our eos friends will soon discover they are not the only sophonts here...

ah, allright, yet... I must impress uppon the fact that your dinos here seem to be rather reptillian... all evidence points to the fact that if dinosuars continued to evolve, they would have become increasingly bird-like.

ah, so there will be saurian sentients!? rather like porvort's dinosuaroids?

Transapient In reply to zypherax [2010-10-30 23:59:43 +0000 UTC]

Well the only dino in there is a spinosaur, no evidence of birdlike characteristics in them... Although if you look closely, there are feathers on the head and arms.

I call the sophont dinosaurs "mandrakes".
I've had them in mind for a long time, and have some very detailed visions of their civilization.

I'll post some things to do with them soon...
